Default Onion soup mix

That's how it started. I want to make quickie beef
stroganoff for dinner tonight (sorry, Dimitri, I'm not
up for the real thing today). The recipe calls for
onion soup mix, you know, the Lipton's stuff. I
really don't want to get that, but I didn't want to get
too many ingredients at the store, either, to replicate
it.

So, I googled groups for onion soup mix. First recipe
I looked at was on a retired military newsgroup, that
amused me, I thought, how many arguments do they
have over there about SOS. Just kidding, I bet there
are lots of great recipes there.

Now, if they had the recipe for sauerbraten that the
exMarine chef served in the cafeteria, I'd kill for that.
I digress.

So, next one I looked at, funnily enough I started seeing
all kinds of familiar names ... Sheryl, Jill, ha, Sheldon and
.... nancy! among a bunch others. I laughed out loud. Of
course the newsgroup was rfc, I wasn't really looking for
just rfc.

Not too many ingredients at all! Shoot, I have everything,
cool.

One of the things was beef bouillion, well, I don't have that,
but I do have RediBase beef base. Not the lower salt, but
what are you gonna do. Reminds me, order more.

http://www.redibase.com I'll be darned, the mailing address
is maybe 10 miles from me. I got chicken & beef supreme
bases, plus no salt taco mix for a joke. I had fun looking
through all the restaurant shortcut stuff they had available.
All kinds of stuff in mass quantities. Next time I need to
make 7 gallons of beef gravy, I know where to look.

And yes, ha, I do remember you told me about that website.

Keep Penzeys toasted onions in your larder (pure onions with nothing
else), great flavor without all that salt and, and a heck of a lot less
expensive than those packets of Lipton's chemo-crap.

For some reason regular onions are no problem for me in any fashion but there is
something in dehydrated onions that just disagrees with me (burp, excuse me)

Heh, I did feel badly saying that, but I either shop one day
and cook another day, or just throw something together for
dinner, easy as possible. Poor planning. Especially when
the cooler weather hits, I'll go back to making your recipe.
I think even with beef tenderloin, I have some in the freezer
that were the ends, kind of misshapen, not like steaks.

I was worn out before I even headed out to the supermarket,
this from reading about your brunch preparations, holy crow.
Great job!

Guess why your name was mentioned in the thread? It was
the one where you convinced me to order the toasted
onions ... I still have some in the freezer.

They're really good... instead of crackers/croutons I like a few in
tomato soup/salads.

Next time, don't Google the groups, just Google for "onion soup mix" or
maybe check (I haven't) one of those copycat recipe sites

Nah, I like to see the comments people made in groups.
It was interesting.

Okay, I 'fess up, I've used Onion Soup mix and even Mushroom Soup mix in
crock pot roast

(No idea if I ever posted that but I want to give you something to gloat
about!)

Oh, ditto, you know that. I really love pot roast and it tasted great to
me. Then, one day, I was really hungry and all I could dig up was that
onion soup in the envelope stuff. Well ... I made that soup and wound up
throwing it out, I could taste all the chemicals and metallic taste,
whatever
is in that, now it's onion soup homemade in place of the soup mix and the
water.

Another consideration was, when I make the fako stroganoff, it's good
but it's definitely salty. Way salty.

No gloating on my part, I even have a couple of cans of cream of mushroom
and, thanks to Carol, a can of Golden Mushroom she was braggin about
once.

Good for you, and the sodium is probably good for you then, too.

Have you tried it? Sure, it's not true pot roast, but it's quite
tasty...

Here's a good-un...septing I use egg noodles instead of spaghetti.

Chicken Tetrazzini ala mushroom soup

3 cups cooked diced chicken
4 ounces thin spaghetti, cooked as directed on package
1/4 to 1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted*
1 can (10 3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sherry
1/4 cup whipping cream, whipped
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Place spaghetti in a buttered 2-quart casserole. Spread chicken over
spaghetti. Sprinkle with the toasted almonds.

Combine soup, Worcestershire sauce, nutmeg, mayonnaise, sherry, and
whipped cream. Pour over casserole. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake
at 350° for 30 minutes.

*To toast nuts, spread out in a single layer on a baking sheet. Toast in
a 350° oven, stirring occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes. Or, toast in an
ungreased skillet over medium heat, stirring, until golden brown and
aromatic.

Watch out for the generics. They're often loaded with MSG.

There are big differences in brands of Onion Soup mix.

LIPTON has a harsh chemical taste, and is quite salty.

Mrs Grass is quite a bit milder, and not as salty.

KNORR is not too bad, but pricey for a "one-shot condiment"
