Consider putting Sheldon's address into your kill file. Its not a
perfect solution, but it works a lot better than nothing at avoiding
postings you know might cause you distress.

What's a killfile, and how do I create one? It sounds like a good place
for Sheldon.

Thanks!

It's a list of people whose messages are not dislayed. Each newsreader has a
different way of doing it. For example in Outlook Express you should open a
message from the person and then select the Message menu and then Block
Sender.

It's sometimes called - for obvious reasons - the bozo bin.

You aren't in my killfile; at least not yet.

Because you are the one whining about it.
And nothing anyone says will ever change Sheldon's behavior.
But you CAN change how you respond to it. If you want to.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make
noise? If someone you find offensive says something offensive and you act
like you don't hear it (or read it)--was it really said? See where I'm going
with this?

Whining about killfiling someone because they are offensive to you results
in more of the offensive behavior because you are giving them the attention
they seek. Shut up about it--don't acknowledge the offensive behavior!
Acknowledging it VALIDATES it, for goodness sake!!!!!
Just don't read the stuff from people you don't like, and they will cease to
exist in your world. Trust me, it's a much healthier way to deal with it.

I hardly read RFC anymore--maybe once or twice a week, and then, only a
cursory glance at the headers. And there are certain posters that actually
make my stomach turn....I don't even click on their posts, because vomiting
is not recreation for me. Neither is being aggravated over people I will
never, ever meet and actually have nothing to offer me in my life. Their
lives are nothing to me, and I'm fairly certain the feeling would be mutual.
Know what? Since I haven't been so active in RFC, I'm actually much happier.
I spend more time with the people who mean the most to me, (including some
friends that I made via this newsgroup) and less time dwelling on the
trivialities of who likes beets and who doesn't, and who boils ribs and why
beans in chili is a bad thing. Who gives a ****? I need some info on
cooking, I know where to go. I need a friend to talk to....I pick up the
phone or send an email to someone. This was a lesson learned the hard way
but I'm glad I finally got it. And I'm a much happier person as a casual
RFCer, let me tell you.

It's a newsgroup. Have fun with it, take it with a grain of salt, but jeez,
Wayne, do NOT let it get the better of you. Be a man and either learn how
to cope or walk away. It's just not worth it.

Your advice is well noted, Sheryl, and I appreciate your concern.

If you hadn't noticed, I already have taken positive action, earlier today,
and the appropriate people are securely installed in my killfile.

Need we say more?

Hope you had a great holiday! I did.

And one more thing I forgot to add.
I think it took me until last summer, after my 41st birthday...but once I
figured out that most people in this world are mean and rotten, and the few
good ones you get to meet in your life are rare and precious, I found life
to be much less disappointing.

Now everyone I meet, I just assume they are assholes. Then, if they turn
out not to be, well, lucky me!

But if they really are assholes, I haven't wasted too much time or energy on
them, and actually it kinda pleases me because then I get to be right about
something!

I'm still a Pollyanna at almost-50. I expect people to be good, and I'm
very rarely disappointed. But the disappointments can be profound when
they do occur.

I still try to think well of people unless they've given me a good reason
not to. Probably got that from my mom.

Which of course makes each and every of those who that at every
opportunity have same abashing remark to make about others especially
to others and most especially in threads not freqented by those made
the topic of conversation, the worst kind of troll there is, which is
precisely the type of troll you are, Dan Able... and you of all people
have no business butting in, simply because in all the years you've
posted here on and off, you've still yet to post anything on topic let
alone worthwhile... Dan Able, you are a shit stiring drama queen

<LOL> Could Sheldon have provided better, more dazzlingly conclusive
proof of the correctness of Dan's observations. I am particularly taken
with the crashing breakdown in English - definitions, content, usage,
spelling, punctuation - Shecky shows. The garbled effusion that is
purely, merely, entirely for the sake of trying to inflict hurt and deep
insult. Instead it reads like some child reaching into its diaper and
flinging whatever it finds there all over the room.

Yes, I'm feeding the troll. But look what I'm feeding him <lifts lid>.

Dan, once again... your California common sense came to the
forefront. I feel that way too. There are situations where taking on
a statement/attitude head first results in a lot of head butting and
nothing else.

Sheldon's life isn't pitiful. Anyone who has "bothered" to converse
with him off line knows that.

Obviously my view differs with yours and a lot of others. I think
Sheldon is a really very nice person *at the core*. Because we're
living in a virtual world, I can pay attention to the online part of
him that doesn't offend me and ignore the online parts that do. In
fact, if we ever met face to face, I think we'd find more common
ground than we do online!

So the way you put posters in and out of your kill file is by reading
post attributes?

I don't use a kill file, so inquiring minds want to know!

What you call vehemence here can't hold a candle to the bile extruded
in other news groups I've chosen not to take part in. OK, we
squabble/debate (depending on the situation) - but it what news group
doesn't? We're like a family where after it's all said and done, we
still like each other (shirt-tail relatives and interlopers are a
completely different matter though).

I'm surprised you're suprised.

How it works depends largely on the particular newsreader software you're
using. The simplest of kill files maintains posters' isp addresses and will
block any posts from those addresses. The addresses may be real or bogus,
but it uses whatever the posted identifies themselves with. More
sophisticated kill files can block threads, entire domains, etc. Some
newsreaders employ both a kill file and a score file. The score file is
extremely flexible in filtering on practically every attribute a post may
contain.

Wayne... when you first started posting here you offended me! I
remember you as someone NOT to respond to because you were absolutely
awful (IMO) and had no redeming qualities. HOWEVER, you've changed
and I think you're a pleasant and interesting poster to correspond
with. (is there a different Wayne I'm mixing up with you?) In any
case, you're a real peach!

<pinching your cheek... the one by your nose - LOL)

Not only have I enjoyed communicating with you online for a long time,
I'd jump at the chance to meet you off line - at an rfc gathering or
at a restaurant... if I go to your area (and please contact me if you
ever decide to come to San Francisco).

Same here, and he was on my case in the beginning. He had been ill
when I first came on and then came back on and called me a newbie and
like I was poisoning my husband with tarragon. Okay, I only serve
dried tarragon now.

Well, seeing how most people aren't likely to talk to him "off line",
that's not a judgement many can make.

Perhaps but does he have to use words like SMEGMA in a cooking group?
Sorry, but that's just gross.

I like some of his opinions. I just think he takes the bashing a bit
too far.

You seem to be pretty quick to wise off to posters yourself, so don't
be such a wimp. Penmart is one of the few knowledgeable posters here.
YOU ARE NOT among that group. You do post some wussy sickening sweet and
sour crap that is pretty much like this ONE. i.e. NOT WORTH
READING! The rest of youse, who can't take it..please refer back 5
or more years, before Penmarts ISP mellowed him. His current posts are
nearly as sweet as Waynes. (too bad) This group would not be much
without the PENMART01 and maybe not worth tuning into AT ALL. Forget the
kill file if you really had him filtered out you would not have a reason
to whine. All filters OFF.. got for it Sheldon! aka PENMART01..the
flaming keyboard from Loooooooong Island.

In real life (what's that?) I usually know immediately when I meet someone
whether or not I will like them. Of course, that's not always the case,
and so it was with you. We clashed head on, and I felt pretty much the
same as you did. Getting to know someone is not a quick process, but it's
usually worth it. I've also come to enjoy our exchanges, even if we don't
always agree, and I always look forward to your posts.

I would be delighted, and the same applies if you're ever in the Phoenix
area.

You're kidding..right? Good god.. I've sat around with a bunch of
nurses and other assorted women and smegma was joked about when talking
about certain men. You've never heard the word? It's a real word. Heck,
we might even joke about your gleet....

I think it's pretty obvious -L knows that it's a real word and what it
means. Otherwise, they wouldn't think it was gross, now would they?
If Sheldon and you want to talk about smegma while eating your
oatmeal, be my guest. That doesn't mean everyone has to like it. Like
someone else said earlier, I'm surprised that you're surprised that
talking about bodily fluids, functions, odors, substances, and similar
stuff while eating is not very appetizing to some people.

Unpleasant bodily secretions are unfortunate, but cannot be avoided by
most so afflicted.

But, there is another word bandied about on this news group, to which
I take great exception. While you complain about SMEGMA and GLEET,
let me mention B E E T , much more objectionable to me and some others
than the above words. ) Barbara, help!

Are you sure you removed him? Some time back, AOL dumped usenet access
and Sheldumb switched to Google. As such, he had to be reentered into
many killfiles because he technically had a new ID.

I agree with you about his behavior, but I just don't see him as that
important. He's a small man with a small mind. Ignoring him is the
proper course.

That -- as you continuously prove -- is the crux of this whole
situation. You talk about kf'ing him and then (more often than not) will
reply directly to his asinine braying. Filter him or don't but the name
of the 'group is rec.food.cooking not waynes.rec.food.cooking.

Yes, I removed him deliberately. I that perhaps things had changed.
