Default Pepper: canned or freshly ground?

Anytime I have a disagreement re cooking, it is with my priest friend.
He says he cannot tell the difference between canned and fresh ground
pepper. I say there is nothing like fresh peppercorns ground and I do
it on everything that requires pepper. And to me there is a BIG
difference.

You?
