This is no joke. What I find incredible is that anyone could consider
anything having to do with Ramen Noodles "URGENT"!

What I find even more incredible is that Elizabeth Prungle and Heather
Spyker actually took the time to write a book about Ramen Noodles, entitled
_The Top Ramen Noodle Cookbook_.

****EXCITING NEWS***&****

I made Ramen noodles TWICE today--both times, with my own unique
"twist," based on a combiniation of my own ideas, and some things I have
read on "websites" and whatnot.

Who can guess the TWO different ways I made Ramen noodles today? First,
I'll give you a hint: I followed the standard recipe, (using "Katra's"
method, thanks, "Katra"!), and I added just won additional ingredient,
each time. The mystery is: what was the secret ingredient???

I'll give you all until daybreak to formulate your answers. (Don't
worry. I don't get up until Noon or so.)

The little flavor packet?

Garlic powder?

(I still think it was pepper and you just won't admit that I got it
right so quickly.)

NO, it was not pepper. YES, I did add the flavour packet each time.
However, I thought I made it clear that I followed the directions on the
package, except I added won additional ingredient at the end. Flavour
packet does not count.

Please try again.

If you want incredible, a friend of mine gave me a link to an MRE
cookbook when he got back from Afghanistan. However, it's not nearly
as creative as what they came up with in the field. <looking like mad

If there's a restaurant devoted to a variety of cooking, of course there
will be cookbooks associated with it.

But... wavyg... weren't you the guy just insulting anime? intentionally?

Try watching Kodomo no Omocha, they've got some wonderful recipes for
ramen in that show :-)

Lena

it's a good show too, about children, but very very deep.

Hmm, no don't recall ever insulting anime--intentionally or otherwise.
If you could explain what you're talking about, maybe I could help you.

I saw you on RAAM (crossposted intentionally). Anyway, some _real_ ramen
recipes generally use real ramen, not the maruchan equivalent.

(inviting friends on RAAM to contribute ramen recipes)

I have wondered about that, Lena. While I like Ramen-style noodles
for various uses (good for disaster food storage, BTW) I don't think I
have ever actually seen "Ramen" as a brand name. I think almost
everything I've seen is the Maruchan brand. I do remember, however,
that as a last-minute addition to storage before y2k, I bought a bunch
of these at 10 cents apiece and just a few days ago, which would be
over 4 years (good grief, how time flies) I tried one and it tasted
like new. I thought they tended to go rancid over time.

That's because "ramen" is NOT a brand name. :P It's a type of noodle, and
also refers to any of a number of soups in which that particular type of
noodle is used.

> I think almost everything I've seen is the Maruchan brand.

Maruchan is the primary brand of instant ramen in North America. Other brand
are Nissin and Smack, but Maruchan is pretty much the top name in the ramen
industry outside of Japan.

The lifespan of packaged ramen is about five years, give or take. It's
loaded with MSG. (REALLY wouldn't recommend eating ramen over 28 months old,
though, by the way. Not really healthy.)

Now, there IS a difference between freeze-dried packaged ramen and fresh
ramen, which is the type of ramen you'd find at a ramen stand or in a
Chinese cafe. That ramen is pressed and cooked fresh, and the quality
difference is noteable...rather like telling the difference between the
pasta you cook at home, and the pasta served in an Italian restaurant.

More like the difference between urine-soaked cardboard and the
richest, densest triple-chocolate New York-style cheesecake
(substitute favourite food of choice here). Even the crap they serve
in the train stations is light-years beyond evilcrappynastyick instant
crap.

I used to work near a real ramen restaurant, and ate there at least
once a week, more if I could spare the time. Sadly, they went out of
business after a few months, and were replaced by a nasty barbecue
joint.

Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin', we're gonna do what they say
can't be done. We got a long way to go, and a short time to get there.
I'm eastbound, just watch ol' "AlleyGator" run.

Uh, excuse me - I was an IT consultant to a fairly large company
leading up to that event. I don't say non-event, because the only
reason it turned out as it did was that millions of people like me
gave up their personal lives for a couple of years to fix it. It
didn't get completely fixed there and the result was that over a
period of time thereafter, about 2/3 of the employees were layed off
in a downsizing which was the only way to save the company. I'm not
talking a dozen people, I'm talking hundreds. So save your "media
hype" bullshit for someone who wasn't in the trenches. Hype? Tell
that to those people's families.
