If you want to use the instant stuff mix it with milk, NOT water.
Water plus oatmeal just equals glue... ugh. Add brown sugar or maple
syrup, cinnamon and raisins/golden raisins to it and it'll be much
nicer. If you don't like raisins, slice a fresh banana or fresh fruit
on top of the cooked bowl, or open a tin of pears. I love oatmeal with
fruit... sounds like you overcooked it - cook it in bursts and stir it
inbetween and it won't explode like that.

You can cook it on the stovetop in a saucepan too - it only takes
about ten minutes...
