Default Spring Food Bank Reminder

I just returned from a fabulous trip where I ate the most incredible food.
Prime tenderloin; crab cakes. Lamb chops. Ground lamb with spinach curry.
Veal piccata. Omelets with spinach and bacon and cream cheese.

Not that I expect to eat like this every day... but think about it, folks...
not everyone can eat like this at all. They need help. They need basic
stuff, like bread and milk and eggs. They need canned soups and dried pasta
and rice and packages of things we tend to scoff about here on rfc but
which, for some people, are the best meals of the week.

So give what you can, when you can. The next time you think about passing
by that silly taco dinner kit, toss it in your cart and add it to the things
you plan to give to help the hungry, the homeless. Give to your local food
bank. It's a gift that is returned threehundredfold.

In our neighborhood, Saturday, May 8th is Postal Carriers Food
Bank Collection day. As good a time as any. From personal experience
I know the poor folks get alot of plain bland foods. This year I think
I'll get some herbs or spices.

You'd be surprised at what food banks get! We have a food pantry at
work where we dispense emergency baskets for folks. Also, we cook for
between 12 and 30 people every day, six days a week.

In my food bank and "second harvest" type stuff I have recieved
everything from entire wheels of imported brie to cases of fresh
portabellos to 30 lb boned buffalo roasts.

What we like to see in the non-perishables are things like rice mixes,
tuna and canned meats, and canned fruits & vegetables. These things
are easy for our members. Things you can eat right out of the can are
good for homeless folks or those without cooking facilities. BUT! The
BEST stuff of all you can give are life's necessesities that can't be
bought with food stamps: aluminum foil, ziplock storage bags,
toothpaste, shampoo, bar soap, body wash, and . . . TOILET PAPER!!!!!

Thank you on behalf of the hungry, the disabled & the great unwashed
:-)

Okay, I wish to not upset anyone here on the rfc newsgroup but ... what
one thing on the list of stuff requested to be shipped down to Florida
after Hurricane Hugo was female sanitary products.

You are? I didn't know that! Does that mean you don't want me to tell you
about my friend? She was in labour for 3 days and when she finally gave
birth, the baby... >:-} (that's my evil grin--does it look evil?)

Extremely so! I always thought you might be evil.
