Sales Drop at Wendy's After Finger Found

Sales Drop at Wendy's After Woman Says Finger Found in Chili; Long-Term
Profits Should Be OK

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Sales have dropped sharply at Wendy's fast food
restaurants in the area of northern California where a woman claimed she
found part of a finger in a bowl of chili, but analysts say the company's
long-term prognosis should not be affected.

Peter Oakes, a restaurant analyst with Piper Jaffray & Co. in New York, said
he doesn't expect Wendy's business to suffer long term from the discovery
Tuesday night of a partial finger.

The hamburger chain serves about 6 million meals a day across the country
and has a "national reputation for both quality and cleanliness," he said.

Know who I feel the worst for? The woman who lost her finger. Her
employer apparently didn't do anything to try to find the severed digit so
it could be reattached.

I'm also appalled that her employer wasn't scrupulous enough to refrain
from distributing the batch of food that was being prepared at the time of
the incident.

I'm cooking more and more meals at home, despite Crash's love of fast food.

That's assuming the finger came from a live person. Maybe it didn't.
There have been some rumors that the finger came from a cadaver and
was added to the chili as a "joke". YUK! (Well YUK even if it came from

a live person.)

Maybe the products in the chili (meat?) came from an imported source
and was canned or frozen overseas. Some non-U.S. sources surely have
lower food standards than here.

I used to hang out with a guy who had a tendency to stretch the truth. He told
me one day that his mother opened up a can of tomatoes and found a finger in
it. He said that she took it back to store. The store happened to be the one
where my brother worked part time. He was the one who gave her money back for
the can. The can was produced by a local company. A few weeks later I was
talking to a girl who worked at the local canning plant during the summer. A
woman on her line lost a finger. The line kept going and the finger got canned.

I didn't believe my friend at first, thinking it was just another of his
stretched truths, but then when my brother and another friend were all
connected to the story I had to believe him.

You know, I just have my doubts about this whole thing. I guess I'm
just a skeptic. Call it intuition, I guess.

I wouldn't have believed it either, but stuff does happen. Still, you'd
think if someone got their finger cut off they'd have yelled bloody murder
and the line would be shut down.

My brother opened a bag of Doritos chips years ago and found a big long
strip of metal in it; I witnessed it. Something had fallen off the
machinery on the production line and got sealed into the bag. So much for
"packed by weight, not by volume"; that hunk of metal weighed at least as
much as the chips in the bag.

My mom found a piece of hardware in a container of ice cream once. At
least it wasn't a body part.

Does your friend and/or his mother eat canned tomatoes to this day? I
don't think I would. No, I know I wouldn't.

Carol, gonna start digging that garden when the ground thaws

Here's more on the story from the Snopes website:

Warning, there is a small black & white picture of the finger
included in the article.

IIRC, there is some question of where exactly the finger came from -- it
may not have been an industrial accident.

Yup, stuff can definitely fall in. DH manages machine maintenance for
a food production facility, and has told me a few stories. Fortunately,
they (and probably many others) use magnets and metal detectors before
shipping out their products...

Snopes is always good and scouting out the truth. I'd heard most of what
was in their article, but there were a couple things that I'd missed.

Thankfully, the picture didn't load when I went to the web page.

I think I need to quit watching the Soprano's. I keep wondering if a whole
body was ground up and the finger was somehow missed.
At any rate "NO MORE SOUP FOR YOU!" lol

Many, many years ago (like 60) my mother found a section of finger in a
can of Del Monte fruit cocktail... I haven't eaten any since.
