This is a response to an old post from Dave. Exactly 5 months ago.

Subject: Rip Alex Trebek
Sunday Nov 8, 2020
From Davers

So Dave....have you been watching it since? I do.

So far, we're on our 4th guest host.
- Ken Jennings for a few weeks
- Katie Curic for 2 weeks
- Dr. Oz (Dr. Odd) for 2 weeks
- currently Arron Rogers for this week and next
- More to come after next week

I guess they're auditioning interested people to take over the show. So
far, I liked Ken Jennings the best.

In my area, it's aired M-F with the guest hosts then every Saturday,
they show an old episode hosted by Alex.

I watch it every night.

Ken did a pretty good job but he is a wienie. I preferred Katie Couric,
but the best was Michael Richards.

Same here.
It's interesting that so many people associate the show with Alex
Trebek. I started watching the show in the 70s with Art Fleming. It
took me a while to get used to Trebek.

That is because some people are idiots and prone to judging people on
irrelevant stuff. I don't watch day time TV or the types of shows he has
been known to express some strange views on various issues. That is what
people are judging him on, not his performance on the show. I watched
the games he hosted and he was pretty good.

You don't have to get your knickers in a twist over him getting the full
time gig. They aren't likely to risk a drop in ratings on that show over
preconceived dislikes. It will be someone more appealing.

> Alex Trebek - Dr Oz - - what the hell were they thinking!!!

He left big shoes to fill. Personally, I think Mike Richards has been by
far the best. I don't know if he is really interested in taking on that
role.

Where did Dr. Oz screw up as host of Jeopardy? Or are you just upset
that he has made comments about pseudo science. I had never seen or
heard of Dr. Oz before his stint as guest host so I had no preconcieved
ideas about his performance, Having seen all the guest hosts, I would
rank him second behind Mike Richards, ahead of Katie Couric and Ken
Jennings, and way ahead of Aaron Rodgers.

I am still not quite sure what it is the Kardashians do that makes them
celebrities, or why anyone even cares about them. For some reason there
are a number of celebrities who are famous for being famous but having
no real talent. Paris Hilton would be another.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keeping_Up_with_the_Kardashians>

And should that not be enough, it contains a link to the Wikipedia entry on
Paris Hilton.

The Kardashians are atrociously ugly, they all look like 15 pounds of shit stuffed into five - pound bags...

IIRC it might have been Zsa - Zsa Gabor who was first mentioned as "famous for being famous"...

The trouble is that in this tabloid-led society, where celebrities are
seen as the founts of knowledge and wisdom, more exposure just gives
this quack more credibility in the eyes of the admass.

You did not answer my question about where he screwed up as host of
Jeopardy. I know that he has created some controversy and I
acknowledged that some people were predisposed to dislike him because of
some of those controversies. They are judging him on the basis of those
things rather than his performance as host of Jeopardy. It's called
prejudice. He is probably a shitty driver and a horrible neighbour too.

Yeah. We need to get back to the good old days when people could not get
ahead in some professions because they were the wrong colour or
religion, or went to the wrong denomination church. Disregard their
ability to do a job well because you don't like the things they believe.

Just seeing a part of one of his shows some years ago told me all I
want to know about him. I really consider it a big insult to Alex
that he would even be in the same boat.

Okay. You have judged his performance as a Jeopardy host without even
watching him. There is a lot of that going around these days.

In the entertainment business, prejudiced matters. Right or wrong,
looks and charisma matters and translates to ratings and ratings
translates to money.

Take 100 random people off the street and at least 80 of them can read
the 6 o'clock news but how many will get repeat viewers.

I wanted to be the star in Top Gun but the producers did not think I'd
draw as much as Tom Cruise. Prejudice for sure.

What's the big deal about a game show host? Is he Canadian or something?

Exactly. If guest hosting Jeopardy had been Dr. Oz's first kick he
would probably stand a pretty good chance of getting a permanent gig.
Too bad for Dr. Oz that people have judged him on other matters so he
doesn't stand a chance. The producers of the show are not going to risk
losing their place at the top of the game show world on a guy with that
kind of baggage.

I am still trying to figure out how Cruise got cast as Jack Reacher. I
am a Reacher fan, and Cruise is the antithesis of the role he is
playing. I have to admit that I was reluctant to watch the first one he
did because I just couldn't picture Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.

I doubt the physical appearance of the character really makes that
much difference, especially in an industry where 90-pound women
can throw 200-pound bruisers around like a sack of feathers.

Cruise has a producer credit on the movie, although that might be
part of his standard compensation package. The director went on
to write and direct several Mission Impossible films, so he at least
thought casting Cruise was a good idea.

You should take a look at Oz's show, then you would understand why
most people puke at the idea of him taking over Trebeck's job. He is
scum.

Reality shows like to feature odd people and lots of personal drama.
A show entitled, "Julie" would be a big hit, imo.

Jack Reacher's size is a very important aspect of the character. It is
emphasized in every book. He is 6'5" and 250 pounds. He is a man
mountain. He is also badly scarred from all the fights he has been in
and recovered from.

It's not about his show. It is about his performance on Jeopardy. If you
are going to judge his Jeopardy performance on his other show I have to
ask if you even watched that or if you are just basing your opinion of
him on what others have said or written about him. Personally, being a
daytime TV personality would likely mean an automatic fail for me.

I made a deal with myself when I retired at 53 that if I ever found
myself watching Jerry Springer during the day I had to go out and get a
job. That guy has somehow managed to still have a show after all these
years of idiocy, so there is some truth to the old line about nobody
going broke underestimating the taste of an American audience.

Of course you had to bring up her name. You were one of those who
claimed that if she left the group we would still be talking about her
and running her down. Every time she left for a while you and a couple
others were post something about her to bait us to talk about her. It
didn't work. When I pointed out how obvious it was that you were doing
it you came up with the story about how you only did it to tease us. It
is much like the times you got called out over stuff and said that you
were only kidding.

Honestly, from what I remember of the character in the movie
the only thing memorable about the character was... nothing.
Just another action hero using his "very particular set of skills".
Might as well blame the script as the actor.

Well there you go. That's because they left out a major dimension of the
Reacher character. He is huge, and very strong. If you read the books
you will see how frequently his size is addressed and how it affects the
plot. He is not a guy who can hide in a crowd. He is big enough to
absorb the damage done to him in the man fights he gets into, and his
many scars are an indicator of what he has been through... and survived.
Tom Cruise just doesn't cut it as Reacher.

Jerry put a few people to work. One day a truck pulled into our lot at
work and the driver was a former "retired" guy. One day he made himself
a martini, sat in front of the TV to watch Springer. Thought about what
he did. Next day went back to work.

I find the Tom Cruisse movies very hard to follow. Maybe it is
because of all the 'action' instead of dialog. Actually, his dialog
seems to be lacking as well.
