There are folks here you say that you are very non-discerning about food. In this case, they'd be correct. Soy oil is the cheapest, shittiest tasting oil, other than maybe Canola. There's a reason why those of us who can taste the difference don't buy cheap, shitty oils. Even me, who is Mr. Frugality wouldn't use soy oil for anything other than starting a campfire. Sunflower oil is neutral. Peanut oil is reasonably neutral. Soy oil is just cheap. --Bryan |

Evidently, there's a lot of people that don't mind the taste of paint thinner. My guess is that it reminds them of happier times painting things. I have eaten bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic. It's okay because you're with other people and we're waiting for food to come. I've been working on some olive and cheese salad given to me by a co-worker. It's olives and feta cheese in olive oil. It taste fine to me. No paint thinner in that one. That might be because I'm eating it cold. I will partake of the oil of olives sometimes but the idea of cooking with the stuff is not appealing at all. |

LOL I cannot think of dsi1 as a fan of olives or olive oil simply because Asian people don't tend to cook with olive oil. Then again he thinks "Italian" food is found at Olive Garden. Jill |

Canned olives are basically substandard at the best of times. Canned black olives are an abomination. I get olives only in delis or at grocery store olive bars, and both typically have at least a half dozen varieties. As for paint thinner..... I disagree, My preferred grease for a grilled cheese sandwich is olive oil. Speaking of which, it is lunch time here. I think that is what I will have for lunch. |

I've had olive oil that tasted like paint thinner. One reason I tend to be brand-loyal on olive oil is to avoid that. I hated to dump out a $15 bottle of olive oil, but there's no way I could have eaten it. Cindy Hamilton |

I had a couple slices of whole wheat bread, some slices of old cheddar, a slice of tomato and thinly sliced red onion. I assembled the sandwich and then poured a little olive oil into a hot pan. I swirled it around, laid the sandwich in the pan and smeared it around in the pan, gave it three minutes, lifted out the sanwich and added a little more oil, set it back in and gave it another three minutes, then another minute on each side. Delicious. |

If I want to flavor the foods that I cook, I use regular soy sauce. That's not radical or special at all. That's the way most people on this planet use light and dark soy sauces. It has nothing to do with olive oil. What does olive oil taste like to you? |

It has nothing to do with olive oil. What does olive oil taste like to you? I know you were asking Taxed and Spent, but to me it tastes like ripe olives with a hint of black pepper. As I said upthread, I've tasted olive oils that were like paint thinner, but they're easy enough to avoid. Cindy Hamilton |
