Soybean oil isn't even listed. Maybe it's considered too disgusting
to be an option.

453 degrees. Soybean oil is a cheap, high temperature, neutral taste, oil. What's not to like?

It's not a neutral taste. There are folks here you say that you are
very non-discerning about food. In this case, they'd be correct.
Soy oil is the cheapest, shittiest tasting oil, other than maybe
Canola. There's a reason why those of us who can taste the
difference don't buy cheap, shitty oils. Even me, who is Mr.
Frugality wouldn't use soy oil for anything other than starting a
campfire. Sunflower oil is neutral. Peanut oil is reasonably
neutral. Soy oil is just cheap.

Then it's the perfect oil for the Chinese.

How much soybean oil have you tasted? I've tasted a lot of olive oil. It has a paint thinner taste to me. I'd be stupid to eat something that tastes like that. Don't give me that "you should be eating a more expensive, brand." That line is a lot of hogwash. They all have that unpleasant taste. My guess is that you're tasting old, used, soy bean oil.

You should be eating a better brand. Maybe your Asianness makes you

I can understand disliking olive oil. What I don't get is thinking
soybean oil is neutral.

It looks like one of my tenants is moving out. I hope the other one
has found a new housemate, or can handle the rent by himself
until he does. The guy is loading up a Uhaul truck at 6 in the
freakin' morning, when it's still pitch dark and is 25F.

I do. Olives taste like olives, olive oil tastes like paint thinner. That's so weird.

It is. I like the paint thinner version and never eat olives. Add some
herbs and it is good for bread dipping.

The taste of olives depends mostly on how they are processed. Canned
olives are basically substandard at the best of times. Canned black
olives are an abomination. I get olives only in delis or at grocery
store olive bars, and both typically have at least a half dozen
varieties. As for paint thinner..... I disagree, My preferred grease for
a grilled cheese sandwich is olive oil. Speaking of which, it is lunch
time here. I think that is what I will have for lunch.

Fair enough. I have a friend who likes the taste of olive oil and hates the
taste of olives.

This explains why you add soy sauce "only" as coloring.
