In going through my pantry, I realized I that I have no wax beans. I did
look at both Winco and Walmart the last times I was in and saw none. None online at Walmart either. A Froogle search turned up mainly some hair removal thing. Target had them for $1.59 per can. The Del Monte brand. Yet nothing came up for delivery the last time I looked. QFC had their brand for 58 cents. Not sure when I will go there again but when I do, I will look for them! I can live without them. They're just nice to have for a change of pace. Are they hard to find where you live? |

I have grown them but never seen them for sale fresh. I have bought purple beans. Not sure what they're called. The turn green when cooked so not worth the price. I do have a couple of cheap cans of three bean salad. i wouldn't pay a premium for beans of any color as they are just beans. get whatever is in season and cheap as possible as long as they are in decent condition. everything i grow here is not sprayed so i don't have to worry about too much crud on them. there are many kinds of purple beans. ![]() multibean salad is pretty easy to make and not that expensive if you grow your own - i used to make a few dozen quarts a year at least. i dislike canned kinds if they are in metal and much prefer those in glass instead. songbird |

When the kids were little, we had a big garden, with trellises set up for the peas and beans. I planted leaf lettuces at the base of the plants - we had very hot summers, the lettuces helped to keep the legume roots cool, and the nitrogen-fixing ability of the peas and beans fed the lettuces. The lettuces also helped to keep down weeds. I always managed two pea crops, one very early, one late, with beans overlapping in the middle. In Scotland, depending on the variety, I could probably get _three_ plantings of peas a season, but I haven't tried that yet. The purple snap-peas I grew this year were delicious - I will definitely be growing them again. |
