Peas and beans are really easy to grow. When the kids were little, we
had a big garden, with trellises set up for the peas and beans. I
planted leaf lettuces at the base of the plants - we had very hot
summers, the lettuces helped to keep the legume roots cool, and the
nitrogen-fixing ability of the peas and beans fed the lettuces. The
lettuces also helped to keep down weeds.
I always managed two pea crops, one very early, one late, with beans
overlapping in the middle.

In Scotland, depending on the variety, I could probably get _three_
plantings of peas a season, but I haven't tried that yet.
The purple snap-peas I grew this year were delicious - I will definitely
be growing them again.
