![]() Never a fan of GE appliances but it is what the builder put in the kitchen of our house. We upgraded the models but stuck with the brand. For the most part, they are OK but after 22 months, the garbage disposal died. Went on line, made an appointment and a repair guy came out five days later. He found the problem, an internal seal let water into the electrical portion, dead short. OK, I'll order another and be back next week. There was a $99 service call even under warranty after one year. First problem, they brag they have most parts on the truck. He did have the smaller 1/4 hp but not the 1/2 hp model. Why not carry the better one and offer to up sell? Of course the model was not readily available so the appointment was moved another week. Meantime, it was delivered. The morning of the appointment I get a call and a recorded message that all calls are recorded and the line goes dead. Half hour later I get an email "Thank you for rescheduling your appointment" They moved it to Thursday. I called immediately but did not good. The snippy customer service person just said "be sure to answer the phone" and hung up. Today the same guy came out and quickly made the change for $69. Lesson learned. I can no longer crawl under sinks but my first inclination was to just dump the POS and put in an InSinkErator or Kitchen Aid like I've had in the past. Would have cost a few bucks more but they last for many years. The only thing GE did was assure I will never buy anything from them again. The repair guy that came out was good, he has no blame but has little support. |

Sounds like once again, automated phone calls SUCK, service is practically nonexistent, people do the best they can with what they have, and the consumer pays and pays! This is the world we have built ourselves, and IT SUCKS! :-( John Kuthe... |

I finally had it totally removed. We're not supposed to use them here anyway. We are told they cause pollution. My stove, dishwasher and fridge are all GE. Not all bought at the same time. Replaced the stove. Fridge is giving me fits. It was randomly freezing things. Now more things and I turned the temp. to the warmest setting. Am now trying to up the temp. in the freezer slightly to see if that works If not, I'll have to get another mini fridge for the time being. I had two. They don't seem to make them very well. Both still got cold but didn't a constant temp. So I only put shelf stable drinks in them. I will need something though as I don't want frozen insulin. I just had to throw out all the greens and celery. Other veggies seem okay. |

That will affect the cooling ability of the refrigerator. I'm not a refrigerator repair person but that's what happened with my GE fridge/freezer before it crapped out for good. You can use a blow-dryer to thaw ice/frost buildup in the freezer and mop up the melted ice/frost; the refrigerator should start cooling again. It's only a short-term fix. In my case, even after thawing the freezer side the refrigerator only stayed cold for another few weeks. I discovered the freezer side stayed cold, temp like a refrigerator, not freezing. So I moved perishables to the freezer side and didn't lose a bunch of food. (It helps that I have a separate, stand-alone freezer for things I really *did* need to keep frozen.) I wound up buying a new fridge/freezer in August. Note: Having a home warranty plan was a blessing; they gave me $650 towards a new one. Jill |

Figure out how much you pay for > the warranties and what you sometimes get back. > YMMV but it certainly hasn't been a rip-off for me. This is a 33 year old house. The appliances are old. The home warranty company sent people out twice in the last year to replace the "works" in the toilets (I have two bathrooms). Only a $40 service call; free brand new parts installed. If I'd called a plumber to deal with it they'd have charged at least $150 to make a house call to diagnose the problem and then charge extra for parts and labor. The master bathroom sinks were continually clogged. Ditto a $40 service call and they cleared them and removed those stupid pop-up drain things (at my request.) No problems since. A local plumber would have charged a lot more. When the refrigerator started acting up, again, a $40 service call. The guy defrosted the freezer, used a small shop-vac to get rid of the melted ice, got it working. But he told me it's a temporary fix because it's an old refrigerator/freezer. He knew it wouldn't keep working so he contacted the warranty company and said it needs to be replaced. They sent me a $650 check towards the purchase of a new one. I'm very satisfied with the premium vs. what I've gotten back in terms of necessary repairs and services vs. what I'd have to pay out of pocket just for a diagnosis without it. Jill |

Note: Having >a home warranty plan was a blessing; they gave me $650 towards a new one. > >Jill We have a GE Fridge w/top freezer and a GE gas stove, purchased about 30 years ago and moved both here when we bought this house, both GE's top of the line Profile models. The computer modual on the stove died some 15 years ago due to a lightning storm, GE repaired it and it's been working fine since. When the GE service guy was here he checked the fridge and recommended that we replace the door seals, they were becoming hardened and brittle so no longer sealed properly. I bought new seals and replaced them myself, an easy ten minute job. The GE tech said most people never check, clean, and replace fridge door seals, which of course causes the compressor to work extra hard and eventually will die. At that time is when we purchased the basement fridge as insurance... a suggestion from the GE tech. He told us that the biggest cause of fridge problems is from people standing there with the door opened for ten minutes while deciding and in the end never choose anything... common with children but many adults are also childish. |

The repair guy that came out was good, he has no blame but has >little support. I would have had the repair guy remove the garbage disposal on his first visit, one person doesn't need any schtinking garbage disposal... why do you put garbage in your sink, don't you own a trash can? There was an InSinkErator in my first house, it was schtupping up the cesspool, was told to get rid of the InSinkErator and I did, no more cesspool problems. Since then everything edible goes outdoors for the critters, inedible goes into the trash can or recyclicable bin, everything compostable goes into the composter... actually we have two composters, they work very well, have been for nearly 30 years. This is by far the best composter, our next door neighbor had no luck with the expensive ones he bought so he ended up taking my advice and bought this: https://www.amazon.com/Algreen-Produ...s%2C211&sr=8-6 He ended up getting a 2nd one too... they are inobtrusive and don't schtink. We have one near our vegetable garden and the 2nd one closer to the house, saves plodding through snow during winter. Deer eat most vegetable parings anyway except onion and they love banana peels. On Lung Guyland the best critters for edibles disposal were seagulls. We really don't compost a lot, the critters are the best composters, mostly our compsters eat coffee grounds and teabags. When I prune trees I toss the branches into the woods in a big pile for the critters to live in. All kinds of critters make their home in those piles of brush. The most trash we have is used cat litter... trash is picked up once a week by a private trash collector for a reasonable price, $20/mo. Most people bury their used cat litter but to me that's pollution. |
