When I opened my microwave oven this morning, there was a rat inside. I
was going to get my husband's rifle, but did not want to make a hole in the microwave. So I just slammed the door again, and turned on the power. I cooked that rat for 10 minutes on high. Not only did that kill it, but it looks like it's well cooked. I just wonder if they are edible? My kids are hungry, so everything I can feed them helps. Ever since the government shutdown, I am no longer able to get WIC food for the kids and our food stamps have beeen cut too. |

However, the government shutdown *is* affecting some folks who get SNAP (food stamps) benefits. The staff isn't there to process new applications or renewals. I saw something on a "local" news station yesterday about food banks ramping up requests for donations to help cover gaps for those who haven't had funds deposited into their SNAP accounts due to the shutdown. The lucky ones have a balance on their accounts and won't have to worry about it until those funds are depleted. But the longer this drags on, the worse it will get. The asshole in the White House is screwing over the whole country with his shenanigans. BTW, I'm pretty sure people have been in situations where they ate rats when they were starving. Prisoner of war camps come to mind. Jill |

One of my uncles was a prisoner in Changhi jail, eating rats was a luxury - he said he never thought about rats in the same way again! Another uncle who was a prisoner in Nagasaki reported the same thing. |

For someone who allegedly was a really smart businessman, the President seems totally
unaware and/or uncaring about what the shutdown is doing to the business world all over the country. I wish I were in a position to help those who may lose their homes because of this. N. |

He's stomping his feet like a kid who is throwing a tantrum. I didn't get my way, so there! Who elected this child? I truly hope he is not invited to make the State of the Union address. Yes, technically he has to be *invited*. It harks back to old Parliamentary procedures in England. The Queen must be invited into the House of Commons before they open Parliament. So must the President be *invited* to give the State of the Union address by the Speaker of the House. I sincerely hope he's not given yet another platform in which to rail about this stupid Wall. > I wish I were in a position to help those who may lose their homes because of this. > > N. > Ditto, N. That's for people who missed the January 14th deadline for their 6-month renewals if they were due to be re-certified for February. Many of the stories we've heard have been skewed and simplified. As it turns out, 99% of SNAP recipients actually got MORE benefits than normal since they distributed February's benefits on January 20th. But once they did that, they are officially out of money. Nobody's SNAP benefits have been cut or missed yet. Only if you didn't file for re-certification in time, then you may miss benefits starting February 1st. -sw |

I know people who depend on the >> gov't dole , and neither their food stamps nor their WIC have been cut . > > The people in this state who get food stamps are getting them early as > the fear is they will not get them in Feb. I don't know about your state but from what I've read about the SNAP program both back in TN and here in SC, you aren't allowed to "get them early" under any circumstances. You receive X amount of dollars per month loaded to your EBT card on a specific date. It's pre-authorized through a specific month/time period. If the government shutdown really did affect offices in your state there wouldn't be anyone there for these applicants to talk with to get these so called early benefits. Can you provide a citation? How about getting a J O B... one that doesn't necessitate spreading your legs. |
