Agreed Ed. Here's a few simple things I have never mastered but tried a few times. Cottage pie (potato). I seem to always get a soggy mass of ick. Pot Pie (flour crust). I seem to always get a soggy mass of ick. Somewhat successful but not better than a packet- Gravy. I have had a few successes (or we accept them as better than a packet). I'm sure we all have things we are not so great at. I did once nail a gravy perfectly from scratch though! Hamburger fat based. It must have been an accident ;-) Carol |

It's so long ago I can't remember lol Most of the funeral parlours here have added on a room for 'celebration of life' ceremonies. They said most people who died now are not affiliated with a church and can't see having a funeral at one. |

The only times I have been in a church for the last 40 years have been weddings and funerals, and it has to be someone very close to get me to a church funeral. |

I have been making it occasionally for the last few years and it always seems to turn out. I tend to like mashed potatoes a little on the dry side. One of the tricks to any any kind of meat pie is to get the sauce the right texture. Potatoes that are too creamy or a meat sauce that is too wet may be the cause. > Somewhat successful but not better than a packet- Gravy. Pour off the drippings and skim the fat off to go back into the pan for gravy. Mix it with equal amounts of flour to make the roux. Cook it until it gets some colour to it. Then start adding the liquid. It sometimes helps to have some extra broth ready to add to it. You need to stir constantly as you add the liquid to the roux to avoid lumps. > I'm sure we all have things we are not so great at. I did once nail a > gravy perfectly from scratch though! Still, it's better than down south. Most of the post mortem events I have attended over the last decade have been celebrations of life rather than church funerals, and even the church events have been memorial services rather than funerals. Even the funerals I have been to over the past few years are more likely to be at funeral parlors than in churches. |

Still, it's better than down south. I don't think most people I know hold strongly about either, they just don't believe in god anymore. Being atheists we carefully avoided influencing our kids but I suppose we did ultimately. We never took them to church so they never had a call to make, plus religion was not being taught in their schools. |

Religious education was compulsory in UK schools when I attended and the day started with an assembly that included a hymn and a couple of prayers. I started questioning, privately in my own mind, when I was 11 and by the time I was 13 or 14, religion stopped making any sense. I had to keep my lack of belief very, very private. |

Up until 1970 the schools in Halifax were segregated, RC and 'the rest' ! Desegregation came at midnight 1969/1970 but there was a lot of anger when it was learned the RC priests were allowed in to preach once a week to all and sundry and lessons were cut for that time period. Looking back, as we now know, that was probably a risky business for kids but didn't last until Easter once we all knew. |

The papist bishop wouldn't allow the schools to have the pupils jabbed for HPV but I think that has been overcome now. Ironically, the separate system is much better run than the public one. |
