I never appreciated why pride was one of the seven deadly sins until
Kuthe started ranting about his wonderfulness.

At boarding school in my day, you were going to get hit if you bragged
about yourself or what you thought you could do better than others. It
would seem it was a good lesson to learn

A certain amount of well-deserved self-praise is one thing. But the
incessant self-righteousness is bound to be corrosive to his own soul.

Sure, most of us have some sort of talent that we excel at. We have to
remember though, on balance there are things we really can't do well at
all.

If you do excel at some particular task, the best way to get
satisfaction from it is not to brag, but to use it to help someone that
will benefit from your use of it.

We ate at an International Society for Krishna Consciousness temple yesterday. I have no clue as to what the heck we was eating but I suppose it was tasty enough.

John, there is a lot of real food cooking discussion. You just are not
interested in it so not reading it.

If you feel you *have* to go to church at any time, then something is very
wrong.

For me, my father-in-law's funeral in June 2016.

Agreed Ed.

Here's a few simple things I have never mastered but tried a few times.

Cottage pie (potato). I seem to always get a soggy mass of ick.
Pot Pie (flour crust). I seem to always get a soggy mass of ick.

Somewhat successful but not better than a packet- Gravy. I have had a
few successes (or we accept them as better than a packet).

I'm sure we all have things we are not so great at. I did once nail a
gravy perfectly from scratch though! Hamburger fat based. It must
have been an accident ;-)

Most of my grade school friends were good at playing musical
instruments, in high school they formed bands and even did gigs. Much
as I tried I couldn't play any instrument so felt left out. However I
was very good at finding them gigs and so I participated by being
their agent/announcer.

For a service:
Wedding, 2006
Funeral, 2010

In Italy, we were in many churches. They are architectural and
artistically great to see. Vatican too.

For me just funerals and those are nearly always in crematorium chapels.

It's so long ago I can't remember lol Most of the funeral parlours
here have added on a room for 'celebration of life' ceremonies. They
said most people who died now are not affiliated with a church and
can't see having a funeral at one.

The only times I have been in a church for the last 40 years have been
weddings and funerals, and it has to be someone very close to get me to
a church funeral.

I'm surprised that the it's on 66%. Still, it's better than down south.

I am not sure I can help you there. I have been making it occasionally
for the last few years and it always seems to turn out. I tend to like
mashed potatoes a little on the dry side. One of the tricks to any any
kind of meat pie is to get the sauce the right texture. Potatoes that
are too creamy or a meat sauce that is too wet may be the cause.

The first think you need is a good sized roast that has cooked long
enough to get some nice dark fond. Pour off the drippings and skim the
fat off to go back into the pan for gravy. Mix it with equal amounts of
flour to make the roux. Cook it until it gets some colour to it. Then
start adding the liquid. It sometimes helps to have some extra broth
ready to add to it. You need to stir constantly as you add the liquid to
the roux to avoid lumps.

Most of the post mortem events I have attended over the last decade have
been celebrations of life rather than church funerals, and even the
church events have been memorial services rather than funerals. Even the
funerals I have been to over the past few years are more likely to be at
funeral parlors than in churches.

I don't think most people I know hold strongly about either, they just
don't believe in god anymore. Being atheists we carefully avoided
influencing our kids but I suppose we did ultimately. We never took
them to church so they never had a call to make, plus religion was not
being taught in their schools.

I had 12 years of Catholic education. I began to question things at an
early age though. They never taught the dark side of organized religion.

We brought up our sons to think critically and to reject superstition.
They went to a public school but I found out that one of their teachers
was having them recite the lord's prayer. I contacted the school board
and put a stop to that. My sons have since thanked me for not filling
their heads with religious claptrap.

Religious education was compulsory in UK schools when I attended and the
day started with an assembly that included a hymn and a couple of
prayers. I started questioning, privately in my own mind, when I was 11
and by the time I was 13 or 14, religion stopped making any sense. I had
to keep my lack of belief very, very private.

Up until 1970 the schools in Halifax were segregated, RC and 'the
rest' ! Desegregation came at midnight 1969/1970 but there was a lot
of anger when it was learned the RC priests were allowed in to preach
once a week to all and sundry and lessons were cut for that time
period. Looking back, as we now know, that was probably a risky
business for kids but didn't last until Easter once we all knew.

Wise words, I am going to frame that and hang it on the wall...

It is a political hot potato. Catholic in Ontario pushed for full
funding and called it equal education. There already was equal education
in the form a public school system that anyone could go to. When the
Liberals were pushing for it the old guard of the PCs passed it, so RC
schools were funded right up to Gr. 13.

I appreciate that RC schools were a concession to French Canadian
Catholics when New France fell and became part of British North America.
However, relatively few RC students are French. Their schools are full
of Italians, Hungarians and many other kids of European Catholics, not
the people who originally got the deal.

Now we have another issue with our province's misstep on French services
and their decision not to go ahead with a French university. I listened
to a number of very articulate arguments from protesters who were
whining about the loss of access to government services. Frankly, their
arguments would have been more convincing if they had been presented by
people with a poor vocabulary and a strong accent, because it sure
seemed to me that they would have no trouble getting their services in
English. I see no need to spend all that extra money to duplicate
services just so the can be served in French instead of another language
in which they are fluent.

There were the Haitian kids talking about how great it would be to go to
a French university and that it was their constitutional right. Heaven
forbid they go to university at one of the French schools in Quebec.
They are already there and they are cheaper.

We have 2 systems here, public and separate (Catholic) and unfortunately
it's in the AB Constitution so we are stuck with it. The papist bishop
wouldn't allow the schools to have the pupils jabbed for HPV but I think
that has been overcome now. Ironically, the separate system is much
better run than the public one.

I always feel I have to not go to church. Is that a problem too? I
thought only 80+ people still go to church.
