Religious education was compulsory in UK schools when I attended and the
day started with an assembly that included a hymn and a couple of
prayers. I started questioning, privately in my own mind, when I was 11
and by the time I was 13 or 14, religion stopped making any sense. I had
to keep my lack of belief very, very private.
