True. It's a rice dish. That's why I said someplace (maybe upthread,
maybe another thread), that rice is crucial to the quality of sushi.

All that stuff people think of when they think of sushi? It's garnish.

Given the choice, I'll always go for sashimi. Sushi's 80% rice.

I forgot what they're called here, but they're common in the
supermarkets when they're in season.

You should buy a few to cook a few different ways before growing
them next year. Make sure he likes them and maybe even you
too.

My favorite way to cook them is to slice them 1/3 inch or so
thick then do the 'flour-eggwash-flour again' thing and fry them
in shallow oil until very nicely browned and crisp. Lightly salt
and pepper.

That is why "sushi" is a rice dish, not a raw meat dish.

Ever had vegetable sushi?

The best sushi I ever ate was all vegetable. I been trying to get that
rice recipe fer 20 yrs. No luck, so far.

I think I mean garnish:

A garnish is an item or substance used as a decoration or embellishment accompanying a prepared food dish or drink. In many cases, it may give added or contrasting flavor.

We mostly grow our own. We like all kinds of squash, summer types and
winter types but we really don't care for ****ghetti squash. Here you
will see several types we grow including giant patty pan which is very
good grilled:

We grow melons too, these are the sweetist cantaloupes:

In Sasebo, vegetable sushi was about 50% of the types at all the places
we ate at. Raw fish containing ones were about 10% and the rest had
some sort of cooked seafood in them.
