True, but some are better at practicing and quoting it than others.

She's smart enough to parlay her occupation into a multi-million dollar
yearly salary. Sounds smart to me. You don't like her, which is not
surprising as you are not happy with anything American, don't watch her.
No one is tying to a chair and forcing you to view her you; simple solution.

The reality is that in all fields of employment - I don't care what it is, janitor, cab driver, garbage collector, doctor, lawyer, whatever - I don't care what they're got hanging on their wall - a certain large majority of people in most fields are not very good at what they do and don't care how they do it, and a certain small minority of people in most fields are very good at what they do and proud of how they do it. I call that "the percentage theory". But it's not a theory, it's fact. For most who graduate from university the learning stops the minute they walk out the door. For a small but dedicated few, that is when the learning starts. Anyone with money can go to school for 8 years. In fact, I'm sure they require 8 years or more not because that much time is needed to learn what little they know, I suspect they do it to keep people who can't afford to go to college out. I have no more respect for doctors or lawyers than anyone in any field. Maybe even less. Most people are not very good at what they do. But across the board a certain small percentage of people are very good at what they do and proud of how they do it. Finding those people is not an easy job.

Yes, in that sense she's very successful. But that doesn't make her
any more likeable, of course.

>You don't like her, which is not

Americans always say that. I don't like much American TV. Nor most
Australian TV. But most of the music that I like, is American. And
that's just one example.

Yes, I don't lie awake at night, worrying about Judge Judy. Sometimes
I zap past her and keep watching for a bit. Australian daytime TV
doesn't offer much choice, apart from soaps, ads and tell sell.

One word: DirecTV. Lots of good daytime programming that is not mind
numbing twaddle. I find most of the garbage is broadcast on ABC, CBS,
and NBC. I only watch the local ABC channel at 5:00 for the news.

A couple of weeks ago I was complaining about waiting in my local codes
office for 3 hours and being tortured by "The Bold and the Beautiful,"
"The Chew/View" or whatever it is called, and "The Price is Right." I
thought I was going to run amuck with mind numbing boredom.

I think the networks are the worst too. I really don't watch tv in the
daytime, I DVR what I want to watch and watch in the evenings as a rule. If
I have a news channel on or something like that I will listen while I do my
housework etc. I always watch the Yankees live, but can't deal with all the
commercials on other programs.

How did I ever live without my DVR? I had a tape recorder but the DVR is
so much more simple. Saturday is my day to record all the PBS cooking
shows and watch them Sunday. During the week I'll either record a show
or even pause it to go do a chore and then I can zip through all those
commercials when I resume the program.

Last week I had recorded a program about art on the BBC America channel.
During the whole program there were tidbits of news stories crawling
along the bottom of the screen. One was a tax on tampons in India had
been withdrawn due to strong protests. Made me wonder who thought such
a tax was a great idea in the first place.

Yes, I record the PBS cooking shows on Saturdays, and also there is a
cooking show on every weekday at 1:30 on PBS which I record. I usually watch
them when dh is fishing or doing yard work etc. I get up very early so
sometimes will watch one then.

I didn't think I would like a DVR and hated to give up the VCR, but now the
VCR seems sort of ridiculous with those tapes etc. I do have a DVD that
plays VCR tapes though. With all the streaming going on I imagine DVD's will
be old fashioned soon.

I'm going to look up sous vide again, put more energy into reading it this
time. It is an LOL for sure that here I am looking for the simplest way to
do something but doing so in the most complicated way. I am sick that way.
A genius, but in reverse. Most true geniuses take the complex and make it
simple. I take the simple and make it complex. I don't mind making bland
foods, I add spices and so forth to them later. So I will check out the
sous vide thing one more time, and thanks for your time while I'm at.

Offering to help someone, or to ask for help for that matter...it is

We watch most everything on DVR. We eat dinner and may be in the dining
room to 6"30 or 7. Then we watch the 6 o'clock news and FF through the
commercials. At that point we may watch something from a previous night
or a show that has been on a while and catch up.

We recently binge watched season 3 of Bosch and started on season 4, gotta
love the firestick. Right now there are so many fires in CA that the air is
terrible, also weather in the 100s and over every day, am pretty much stuck
in the house, so watching more tv than usual.

I feel for you Cheri. Several years ago there was an ongoing fire
not too far from here in NC. Any SW wind blew all the smoke here.
It was horrible. Even looked like fog when it got real bad. It
lasted for 2-3 months.

Anyway, once I finish work and minor shopping, I like to stay
inside and I do watch lots of TV. I pay enough for it so I want
to get my money's worth....and I do.

I always used to live at the beach in my spare time but I'm older
now and very content to stay inside at night. I read, watch tv,
do internet....then eat and sleep. It works for me.

For some strange reason though, I do cherish living so close to
the ocean. It's the edge of a vast wilderness.

:-D

I have a Firestick, it's nifty and it only cost $20. I recently got the 4K Fire TV with Alexa and it's super fast and the beautiful picture is like a revelation to my eyes. Sometimes I'll just stare at the screensaver. It was only $35 during the Prime Day sale. It's the best 35 bucks I've ever spent.. I plan on watching a lot more TV!

Sorry about your predicament. I've been over there during a dry period. The place looked like it was going to explode. Brown hills with ugly black patches of previous fires. It was unbelievable.

It will get better though. Trump's going to do something about global

I had a friend (at work) from england that had always "lived by the
sea". He yearned to go back, but he was very devoted to his very elderly
and sickly dog. It was apparently an insurmountable problem to get the
varmint legally imported back to the UK, without a long quarantine period.

He truly loved that animal, and he accepted the sacrifice.

No, it's just that I sometimes have a non-mainstream opinion and that
can upset the mainstreamers.

I envy you living near the ocean. Right now it looks like just a huge
brownish gray haze outside and 100 degree weather. At least I am in air
conditioning thinking about those poor firefighters trying to fight all of
this mess and all the people that have lost their homes. They have
determined that one of the large fires in SC was senseless arson.

You're having one of your frequent meltdowns so now you're in a time out
until you get yourself together. Take the time to gather your wits, maybe
read some labels, ingredient lists, etc. I hear that's very calming for you.

Weather in St Louis MO normally sticky swelteringly hot is atypically very nice and coolish!

Yeah, there was a LOT of fire fuel up in dem hills! Just helping Mother Gaia out a little!

Oh, not fire fuel, houses?Â*Oops! Fire did not seem to care.

I'm angry and saddened that 5 of the CA fires were set by the same
person and that 2 firefighters lost their lives and hundreds of people
lost their homes. Those firefighters work in awful conditions, often
with killer heat. I admire that there are people that are willing to
do the job.

I often tell myself to stop arguing with you, because I don't really
hate you or anything. But then you say something snarky or obnoxious
again and off we go. Maybe you should start smoking the occasional
joint to mellow out a bit.

Was that the fire in georgia, near the Florida line?

I had a friend (at work) from england that had always "lived by the
sea". He yearned to go back, but he was very devoted to his very elderly
and sickly dog. It was apparently an insurmountable problem to get the
varmint legally imported back to the UK, without a long quarantine period.

He truly loved that animal, and he accepted the sacrifice.

Yes, some 32 year old that started some of the fires in Southern CA, for
what reason nobody knows since there could not be any sane reason for the
willful destruction.

No this was in 2011, border of VA and NC line.
The Great Dismal Swamp. Maybe 40 miles from where I live.

Good for him. Pets become family and should be kept for life if
at all possible. I've seen some people that will ditch their old
pets just for convenience. I've done hospice care for 3 ferrets
and a few cats. once they enter their last year or so, it's a
pain to take care of them and requires much more time. I've known
a few that have them put to sleep too early because "they are
suffering." Sometimes, it's the caregiver that is suffering and
just wants them gone.

My parents always had an offer of...if things go bad, you always
have a place to stay with us. That always gave me peace of mind
and an extreme option. About 12 years ago, my business was
failing and I was worried about things. Again, I was told...you
can always come here if you need to. That time though, they
added...but no ferrets here. Well, that immediately ended my
extreme backup plan. No way would I ditch my kids. If it had come
to that, I would have bought a tent with my last dollars and
camped in the woods with my ferrets. heheh

Luckily, I got myself out of that mess and went back to work with
my old company who welcomed me back.
