Default Costco has lost its mind

I shop at Costco on occasion, typically for the deals on 100 pounds of
chicken wings and 55 gallon drums of shampoo. I am not a food activist but
I intend to fight this one. I always eat 2 polish dogs when I shop there
and despite their humble attraction I nonetheless enjoyed them sitting at a
concrete table dappled in wads of discarded chewing gum, bird droppings and
other dark and sticky masses.

I noticed that they had been eliminated from the list when I was there
last week. I won't be interested in their vegan offerings. You can
still have a hot dog.

According to what I just read, yes, they are. Seems dumb to eliminate a
customer favorite though. People still want them individually after
shopping.

In Europe they do a lot of house renovating. But most of the time, you
hire them individually.

I heard talk of them eliminating the churro, people had a fit and
I guess the idea died because I still see them. And once in a while
buy them.

Maybe 3 times a year we'll have lunch at Costco before shopping.
We'll get a hot dog and soda and one other item and split it. I
can't see missing anything on the menu that would upset me. It's
just a convenience situation.

It does seem to be popular with a lot of people but I have to wonder how
they can make any money on the stuff at those prices. My wife was
reluctant to shop at Costco but I finally got her to come in with me and
get her card. She was a little hungry and thought the $1.50 hot dog
sounded like it would fill the gap. She was puzzled when the girl
handed here a cup. I pointed out that the $1.50 was a combo that
included the soft drink.

A friend and I make runs to Costco by motorcycle about once a month. It
stops us from getting carried away. I usually get a case of pineapple
juice and an assortment of cheeses or some coffee. We sometimes grab a
hot dog special. You can't go wrong for that price.

I've never seen that set-up. The dogs I buy are long and I have to
shop around for buns that fit.
Apparently Costco carries very different things at various stores

If I get a hot dog it is after shopping and I am just too hungry to
finish out my chores without food.

Costco has clearly stated for years and years and years. They make no
money on the hot dogs and drink or the rotisserie chicken and a couple
of other things. They keep them for the customers.

They are not making anything on the hot dog, I'd guess. Seems a matter
of pride to keep it at that price.

And it's not just plain, either, there are toppings. Onions, relish
and I think sauerkraut? if you want them. Anyway, it's a bargain and
people love it.

They don't make anything on anything. All prices are set as close as they
can calculate to whatever it costs buy it, ship it, and store it, adding in
overhead and labour costs.

Their profit margin is the membership fee.

One of these days, you won't be getting no hot dog combo for $1.50 either. It's going to be $2.00 and people will bitch. Too bad! If I were Trump, I'd raise the price to $3.50. People will bitch like hell but they'd still pay for it because it's going to still be the best deal in town. Ka-ching baby!

Maybe they have in some locations. There doesn't seem to be much
consistency among stores. <shrug>

I heard about this on a national news channel this morning. It's no
skin off my nose since I don't shop at Costco. But the report I heard
claimed Costco intends to replace the polish dog at the *snack bar* (not
on store shelves sold in packs) with "healthier" alternatives.

I'm sorry, what? Does the average customer eating at a snack bar in a
store really think about whether or not that polish dog (or anything
else) it is healthy? I'm thinking they're just hungry. Damn food police.

By eliminating something people love and would likely pay more for if
they kept serving them? Doesn't make sense to me.

Yep. Saw a TV show about them years ago. They said they were not making
money on it and refused to raise the price.

FWIW, I was in Costco yesterday and my friend and I had a "
tube of death". That Costco still has the Polish Sausage on the menu. I
looked at some of their other offerings and they are cheap, but they
don't come near the value of the tube of death and a soda.

Restaurants here have to show the calories in their food. Costco's
stuff is pretty high. Their Poutine in something like 1500 calories. I
was surprised to see how many people were eating that.

We ended up sharing our table with a man and his wife and had a nice
chat. It turned out that the wife grew up in the same small town I did
and lived just a few blocks from me. My friend told about growing up in
Baie Comeau QC and the other guy had cousins there and my friend knew
them.

Ha. They don't keep money-losing items "for the customers," they keep them as loss-
