Default Oven wastes energy?

That iron pot is still in my family, but I don't have it.

The house I lived in for the first 10 years of my life was a three
story 19th century Victorian in St. Louis. It had a laundry chute
that ran from the 3rd story down to the basement with a catcher box
at the bottom. In that basement is where my mother had a
wringer/washer and double laundry tubs for rinsing. The third floor
was actually for live-in help but was only occupied by them for three
years when my mother was seriously ill. Afterwards it was converted
to additional guest rooms.

The house was originally piped for gas lighting when it was built and
the system still functioned, although we only lit the gas lighting
during the Christmas holidays. The house was later completely wired
for lighting and outlets. We had a built-in top-loading dishwasher
with a lid that raised out of the countertop.

That was my favorite house that I ever lived in. :-)

My father's parents house had a coal stove in the kitchen. They would
put a brick on the stove and take it to the bedroom and put it under the
covers for heat at night. The only water and toilet was a shed off the
kitchen.

Our toilet was in a 'shed' across the yard.
