Janet, I thought you'd get a kick out of what I saw at my local
supermarket bakery section this morning.

Quick! Call the holiday police!

Nope didn't catch that one, but did catch a woman saying 'I should

I will also be glad when 'sooo' is no longer the buzz word. Bad enough
when it was 'moving forward' - almost prefer the kids with like.

Nah, I have seen other mangled spellings there over the years. This is
an older store, nothing fancy, and if one is taking the common path
into it to shop, the bakery is what one passes through first. This
table was right at the entrance to the department. I had to be careful
not to hold up traffic as I took a pic.

It is the same all over here. It drives me nuts when I hear the
vaunted guests/experts/journalists on news programs, begin every
sentence with "So..."

You assign to them an awareness I fear does not exist.

Some of their baked goods are not bad, though.

That's not nearly as overused as "now".

"We don't make Butter Letter in our bakery, but we know many Dutch
wives who pride themselves in making fantastic Butter Letter."

(ignoring the gender bias) In 45 years in the Netherlands I've never
seen or heard of any one making boterletters themselves. It's true
that they are popular as store bought seasonal items though.

Have you ever made Suikerbrood or Sugar Bread? It is basically a brioche
type dough in which pieces of crushed sugar cubes are incorporated. On
baking, they dissolve leaving little holes throughout the bread. I got
the recipe from a book on Dutch baking that my ex gave me (her husband
is Dutch). The book describes butter letters but doesn't give a recipe.
I have some crushed maple sugar in the cupboard and have thought of
making a Canadian version.

I have no 'thesis' on the subject but I do understand how women in the
1920s must have felt about the lack of contraception. I have pointed
out to my son that the pill and he came out in 1962 and that might be
why he did not have younger siblings.

There's a certain irony in calling them Sheikh - that makes me think
of the fact that many Arabs who had to cross deserts did not want
their camels pregnant and they knew that a small, round pebble
inserted in the vagina would prevent pregnancy. That led to todays
'vaginal implant' as a contraceptive. Everything old is new again.

That has nothing to do with your response, or my link - non sequitur!

And yet the name was not chosen for any perceived contraceptive
efficacy, as my link proved.

It was a celebrity tie-in of the earliest kind.

Valentino, Rudolph - actor, latin lover, heart throb, capisce?

You derailed on this one dear.

An old friend and her son were visiting us a few years ago. They had
moved to Texas almost 40 years earlier. The son was saying something
that should have used the plural of "your"..... your. I came out as
yourall's.
