I wouldn't want to go swimming in most US rivers either. The only thing I know is that it doesn't have that bottom-feeding, scummy, taste that catfish has. Catfish meat is great stuff except for the taste. The second only thing that I know is that it hasn't killed me yet. That's good eats in my book. ======= A catfish is what put me off a lot of river fish. we used to fish for them just about every night in the Sacramento River using clams for bait, caught a fairly large one one evening and when it was cut open to clean, it was the worst smelling thing I had ever smelled up to that point, absolutely nauseating smell that I hope never to smell again. No more catfish for me, and many other fish types too. DH is a fisherman so he eats all of his catches, not me. Cheri |

They're really beautiful pieces of meat too. It cooks up great. The taste made me gag though. My guess is that some (lucky) people are not able to taste that flavor component.. Tilapia has that taste too. My understanding is that tilapia raised in salt water will taste fine. Well, lets start doing that then. |

Not my first choice, but if served, I'll eat it. Tilapia eats crap too so I avoid it. |

That's the breaks. |

Both are bottom scavengers and often feed on dead things. They eat crap. |

I used to eat blue crabs once in a while but have not had any for probably 30 years. |

Tilapia is found everywhere in stinkin' waters and they have taken over our overland waterways, displacing our native species. The very idea of eating one of these nasty, dirty, fishes is revolving. That said, I wholeheartedly encourage people on the mainland to eat tilapia because they're a wonderfully sustainable fish and because the only good tilapia is a dead tilapia. |

I don't. As I said in another post, I tried a dish in a Mexican restaurant with some trepidation because the fish was talapia. I had low enough expectations that I was not disappointed by the taste and texture. It was pretty much as bad as I had expected it to be. I had previously considered getting some frozen fish tacos but opted not to because it was talapia. Since that time I have been to one of my favourite restaurants and considered getting their Thai fish dish. It used to be made with white fish but they had changed talapia so I opted for something else. If it is as invasive as you say and they need help to exterminate it they can start giving it away. I don't hate it enough to never eat it. I just don't want to pay for fish like that. |
