Default Today's my birthday and . . .

Today is my birthday.

My husband took the truck into the Ford dealer first thing. We'd had
the truck in for a repair 10 days ago and the truck was leaking some
oil. They'd had to put a oil filter relocation kit in and had
simply neglected to put a clamp around the hose. As they lifted it up
on the hoist, they punched through the forward gas tank with the lift!
So what would have been a few minutes to fix is now looking to be
anywhere from a couple days to a week or more.

They sent my husband home in a rental car.
There is no charge for the car, a new gas tank, and a clamp for the
oil hose. No charge for anything and a good thing too.

I wish I had been there, I'm just bubbling with stuff to say.

So, we are still going out to eat tonight.

If you said anything more than "thank you", you'd be an ass. A mistake was made and they show every sign of wanting to make it right.

Sounds like today is your lucky day. I sure wish somebody put a hole in
my VW's forward gas tank - then set fire to it. However, no such luck.

Happy Birthday. Today is my birthday too.

Keeping cars going is a real bother even when they don't mess things
up.

Happy Birthday.

What did they give you to drive? In my case, the dealer said they could
flash the ECM with an update. Turned out they burned it out instead so
they gave me a loaner while they waited for a part the next day.

The took in a Sonata, but for the loaner they upped me to a Genesis. I
had it for the day. I liked it so much, a few months later I bought one.

I used their luxury car, their gas, had a nice day out. On the way back
after 150 miles I swapped and got my car back. Stuff happens, nothing
bad I could say.

How in the hell did they manage that?!?
Did they use a proper car hoist?

Happy Birthday. Your truck experience is not quite as bad as that of a
friend of mine from the dog park. He needed an oil change. His son
offered to do it, figuring he could save him a few dollars. Given the
price of oil and filters these days and the dealing with the messy work
and the oil to dispose of, and the number of quick oil change places
around, it is pretty cheap to get it done.

It seems his son did something wrong and it didn't take very long for
the oil to run out and destroy the engine. The took it to a local
garage where there was a truck the same make, model and year and the
same engine, but the body was kaput, so they are going to swap out the
engines. For some reason it it going to take a long time. It seems that
you have to take your time and to things right. That leaves me wondering
about the competence of the job. I worked in our equipment section for
10 years. Changing an engine is less involved job that many others that
he had to deal with. Disconnect it, unbolt it, take it out... revers
the above. It may be a few hours work, not days or weeks.

Happy Birthday Janet B! :-)

Yeah, I had my fave shop damage my now dead 1994 Caravan when a garage door cable failed and the garage door in one of their service bays came down on the hood of my 1994 Caravan a while back, and they gave me all sorts of free stuff, service and parts! (Which of course is now moot, as Baby, my 1994 Dodge Caravan was killed early Halloween morning last year, 2015!)

It could only be either the oil filter or drain plug left loose to
cause that. It's a wonder the engine or oil light didn't come on well
before any serious damage occurred?

That would depend on the vehicle in question, some engine swaps are
quick and easy... others I wouldn't like to have to do at all (I'm
thinking late model vehicles here). But you mention a donor vehicle
with kaput body, so it does sound like an older model vehicle. Should
be a one day job, even without proper equipment like engine hoists,
etc. It only took three of us about six hours to swap over my Hilux
diesel engine, including beer breaks.

Argh. Years ago I had my car in the shop and they were
taking it into the garage and someone lowered the door across
my windshield. I got a new windshield for free!

Something I didn't want or need until they got ahold of the car.

You can thank China for your lucky fortune. That faulty garage door cable was made in Sumdumgui providence. My guess is that all of your lucky breaks will will caused by cheap Chinese products that fail! Gong hee fat choy!

It could be worse. On Saturday evening I heard heard helicopters flying
around and figured it was a bad sign. The only big helicopters were
usually see around are the air ambulances. It turned out that a couple
guys were badly burned in a house fire/explosion that happened when they
were doing some work on the gas tank of a car in the garage. They were
taken away in critical condition.

Yep. One or the other. I don't know if he left them loose and they
worked their way loose or if he overtightened the oil plug and stripped
it. If it was a loose drain plug and fell out on the road it would not
take long for the oil to drain out. I guess it was a good lesson too
late about pulling over immediately when the oil light comes on...
especially so soon after an oil change. Once the oil is gone serious
damage occurs within seconds.

I'll tell ya what empties a crankcase faster than that!! When an oil galley plug blows out of a VW Type I (Volkswagen Beetle) engine! I had that happen once! Oil light came on, so I immediately shut the engine down, checked the oil level (low) and put more oil in, started the engine and wham! Oil light came on again almost immediately!! And I got out to find the biggest oil spot I'd ever seen under a VW!! Had to have the Bug towed, to avoid destroying the engine.

Happy birthday! I'm glad you got a rental, and all work comped.

I've had two experiences with stupid mechanics that I know of. One where
they lowered my car down from the lift and started it up, and it lurched
forward into the closed garage door. Dented the door badly but didn't
seem to do any damage to my car. The other time I didn't discover it
until a few months later but it could have only been the last mechanic
that lifted the hood. The hood lift cable had snapped so pulling on the
lever didn't disengage the hook holding the hood down. I had to fight
with them to pay to fix it.

I used to do my own oil changes. For the first change on my '91 Regal
I bought the filter, the oil, drove the car up on ramps. Cursed a few
times. That was the last time I did it myself. It was best done
reaching in from the side with the wheel turned just right.

I find it easier to sit and read the newspaper and give the guy $30.

Ditto. Plus they top off the other fluids and wash my car.

My husband does too on the older truck, spark plugs, et. al. But the
new truck has parts placement that are basically unreachable without a
hoist and special tools. That was one of the reasons for the oil kit.

Yes, could have been over tightened. A lot of ppl over tighten them.
Oil filters generally only need an extra quarter turn once they start
to feel snug/tight.

Yes, most engines don't like no oil for some strange reason!

Sheesh. Half a mill damage too.

"Kennedy said the men were working on a car’s fuel tank when fuel was
ignited by a spark from a garage light"

Sounds like they were using a lamp on a lead and broke the bulb, then
kaboom... they should have filled the tank with water before doing
that sort of work. An empty fuel tank can be more volatile than one
with gas in it too, which some people don't realise.

Windscreens aren't all that difficult. The most time consuming part of
the job is cleaning up the mess from the old one. The only tool you
need is a piece of rope with the older windscreens with a rubber
surround. Oh, and you need a second person to help...
Did one in my Hilux and it's perfectly sealed.

My Subaru is the newer type that sits in the frame with 'sticky goop',
they look to be just as easy. I had one in the Subaru replaced by my
insurance company, I almost couldn't believe it when they actually
came all the way out to my place to do the job.

Oh he was a pro. He had a thing that mounted to the car with big suction cups to hold and swing the new windshield into place. And yes he cleaned up the sealing area after the old windshield was taken out. It just had a crack that had gotten too long to pass inspection anymore so I had to replace it.. No rust or anything arojund the old one either.

Yeah, if you have those suction cup thingies, it can be done by one
person. Otherwise you need two people to do it without damaging
anything.

Yes! It's not expensive and I can have some crappy Keurig coffee while
I'm waiting. (laugh) They top off all the fluids and change all the
filters, too.

My brother once told me our dad bullied the people at Zippy Lube to do
the oil changes at the house. Gee, I guess I don't have that kind of
mojo. I'm a mere mortal; I have to drive over there.

That reminds me of something funny. I had a fender bender years ago. I
took the car to a body shop to have it repaired. There was a woman
there who was ranting and raving about how they'd broken off the hood
ornament on her Mercedes and she wanted it replaced! NOW! She left,
brought her husband back. He started yelling, too. The owners of the
shop wound up calling the police to have them removed from the premises.

The clerk told me she had not brought a Mercedes to their shop, it was
an old beat up Chevy or something. But they insisted the shop had
broken the Mercedes hood ornament and demanded they give them a
replacement. (Apparently those hood ornaments are worth some money.)

That was a fun afternoon. Lots of drama.
