Default Worthless bacon trivia

They held a bacon festival near here last weekend but I didn't go. The
newspaper had an article about it though. It also added some bacon
trivia.

- Bacon is one of the lowest priced meats. Prices dropped 25% last
year according to the USDA.

- Bacon is one of the oldest processed meats in history. The Chinese
began salting pork bellies as early as 1500BC.

- A 250-pound pig yields about 23 pounds of bacon.

That's all. I TOLD you it was worthless info.

Not worthless at all. You never know when someone may ask "I wonder
when they first salted pork bellies?" and you'll have the answer.

Price of beef is way up and pork is way down. Lowest I recall in many
years.

The lower price of pork is why I bought a couple of pork tenderloins at
the store last week.

My wife eats about twice as much bacon as you do. We buy at least one
pound of bacon each week. I have a couple strips of it on Sundays when
we do a brunch thing. She has it almost every day.

I seem to be using less bacon lately. I still love the taste of bacon
as much as I used to - but a little bit seems to go a lot further for
me these days. No idea why that is, probably just a phase I'm going
through. Not all that long ago I would have come close to going
through a pound a week on a regular basis.

One of my favourite breakfasts is a couple of strips of streaky bacon
with some onion, a cooked tomato and sliced avocado on the side.

HUH?? I split a pound into 4 strip packets and freeze - I guess it lasts 6 months.

Is she overweight, by any chance?

=======

Depending on the thickness of the strips there are around 20 or so slices to
a pound, so if she stretched that pound out over a week with him eating a
couple of slices on Sunday, it would average out to less than 3 slices a
day, hardly anything to cause overweight.

Surprisingly:

http://greatist.com/health/saturated-fat-healthy

Why Saturated Fat Can Be Good For You

Saturated fat has been shown to have loads of positive effects on the
body, including:

Liver Health: Saturated fat encourages the liver cells to dump their fat
cells, which helps the liver to function more effectively .
Immunity: Saturated fatty acids, especially the kinds found in butter
and coconut, help white blood cells to recognize and destroy invading
viruses and bacteria. Go get ‘em, boys!
Hormones: Eating saturated fat tends to increase free testosterone
levels, which helps to repair tissue, preserve muscle, and improve
sexual function .
Now, fat is high in calories, so it can promote weight gain in that
respect. Per gram, it has more than twice the calories of protein or
carbohydrates. But provided an eye is kept on portion size, saturated
fat in and of itself doesn’t have any negative impact on the body. In
fact, increasing fat intake might help with weight loss: One study found
that when three groups of obese people were fed diets of 90 percent fat,
90 percent protein, and 90 percent carbohydrates, respectively, the
high-fat group lost the most weight . Plus, it tastes freaking delicious.

I don't think Americans are boycotting bacon. Everywhere I shop, the
bacon seems to be flying off the shelves. The bacon Americans are
eating was produced on American farms. Why do I care if the Chinese
government has legally purchased the stock of Smithfield on Wall
Street? Are they going to take all our bacon away and feed it to
Chinese consumers?

I'm boycotting crappy bacon, which includes quite a bit of
Smithfield's products. $10/lb for Nueske's is worth it
to me.

Nah, they're going to control OUR industry and poach production and
cleanliness techniques.

http://fortune.com/2013/06/04/the-re...of-smithfield/

With Shuanghui’s purchase of Smithfield, these numbers are less
abstract. The real story behind this transaction is that far-sighted
Chinese entrepreneurs fully understand that, because pollution has
contaminated major parts of China’s food chain, their future profit
opportunities lie in buying the entire food-production process abroad.
Bagging Smithfield, in this sense, is not about getting its hogs,
pork-processing technology, or even premium brand. It is really about
owning access to America’s safe farmland and clean water supplies.

No, that was a rumor only:

http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/smithfield.asp

Moreover, people engaged in that industry have told us that the notion
of a Chinese-owned company raising hogs in the U.S., shipping them live
all the way to China for slaughtering and processing, then exporting the
meat back into the U.S. would be prohibitively cost-inefficient —
especially since the slaughtering and processing infrastructures already
exist in the U.S., and the Chinese domestic market for pork is far, far
larger than the U.S. market for pork.

For the record, I never once even considered sleeping with you. And
you know that. You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was
going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the
total blue.

After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3
years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of
romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY
MOVING IN WITH YOU?

That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the
screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too
spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands
down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least
he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar
at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2
years.

Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why
your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation
and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd
prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo.

And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bullshit and visions of
grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done
in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people
about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as
if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're
manic depressive mixed with habitual liar.

Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles.

Thanks. I'll see if I can find it locally. That's one
of the pluses of Nueske's: several local stores carry
it.

If not they are a responsive place to order online from.

Their hams are of the highest quality as well. I have never been let
down by Burgers on any food item.
