Default Harris Teeter? (a grocery store)

Word has it, since Publix vacated their old (approx, IIRC) 35,000 sq.
ft. store and built a much larger store across the street, Harris Teeter
is thinking of opening a store in the old space.

I've only heard of Harris Teeter because it's been mentioned here a few
times over the years.

If you're familiar with the store, got any thoughts about it? Good,
bad, indifferent?

I'd really rather not see that space sit empty for a few more years.
It's a good location. Easier to get to than the new Publix, too.

There was one about a mile and a half from work and I really
liked it. They would have some pretty good sales at times and
the store was always super clean. But it closed the first of
June as Kroger bought it.

Jill. I've got 3 stores within a mile from me. Farm Fresh, Food Lion,
and Harris Teeter.

I mostly go to the Farm Fresh. Sometimes I will go to the Food Lion
for sales and it has more variety. The one store I almost NEVER go to
is the Harris Teeter. I've never liked it.

Harris Teeter is a huge store (like my Food Lion) but their prices
aren't all that, imo. Good produce section but always higher priced
than the others.

They do require that you get and use a card if you want the sale
prices. They also have a second level of card (their e-card). Even
better prices occasionally but only if you are a member. I ignore that
store. I'll go there maybe 3 times a year.

Of course, the Food Lion also requires a card to get the sale prices
and I know you've mentioned that you don't like your nearby Food Lion.

Once your Harris Teeter opens, I think you'll find that they and Food
Lion are pretty much the same. You'll need to try both at that time.

Not much help but you just need to try it out yourself. No Publix
store here so I can't compare that.

Harris-Teeter has an excellent selection groceries Jill. It's sort of
an upscale store catering more to the upper middle class of society.
Their produce department has always impressed me. It always smells
good in their stores, fresh and clean. They were recognized by
Consumer Reports several years ago for their innovative marketing
techniques. Recently, they were acquired by Kroger. I hope Kroger
bought them to learn from them and not turn them into a Kroger. They
still operate as Harris-Teeter. They never claim to have low prices.
You definitely ought to check them out.

Agreed. Small but very nice meat section. Terrific baked goods -- much
broader selection and much higher quality than Publix. They also carry
major brands of packaged goods, which Whole Foods does not.

If I had to choose one chain for all my grocery shopping, it would be
Harris Teeter. (Fortunately, I don't!)
