Next Wednesday, Lent begins. The day before is informally known as "Paczki
Day," for the Polish jelly doughnut eaten at that time. Letting my googlefingers do the walking, I learned that the Polish paczki became the Yiddish ponchiks, which are known in Israel under their Hebrew name, sufganiyot.
