I just got one for myself. At first blush, it looks pretty good, but I
have yet to actually make a recipe from it.

Yes, I just got one as a Christmas gift. "The New Family Cookbook". It is a very large, well put together book. The only problem I have with America's Test Kitchen is that they tend to be overly fussy. But I still get good ideas from them and look forward to using this cookbook.

I bought that cookbook a number of years ago. I really like
the recipes in it, it's a great basic cookbook, too.

Would you say it is as fussy as Joy of Cooking, which drives me nuts with all the sub-recipes they refer to.

I must admit I've never looked at the Joy of Cooking.

I used to have it but never liked it. I let my daughter take it with
her when she moved. I'll bet she never refers to it either.

LOL! The bowtie guy. At least it's a real cooking show instead of
lame competition shows.

Test Kitchen is only shown once a week here at 10am on Saturdays. I
usually miss it but I do like it. Then there is Cooks County....same
show just different name. I like those two shows but I usually miss
them...not into watching tv that early.

Me too. It's not appointment television, but (unlike cooking
competitions) I don't turn the channel when I stumble into it either

Is that the same guy who publishes "Cooks' Illustrated"? That's a very
good magazine, not diluted by ads.

I have never seen the show. I asked only because I saw them touting a slow cooker cookbook on QVC and the guest stated that they made the recipe 50 times or so to get it perfect. That's a bit of tweaking.

I'll have to watch for the show.

If you're being paid to do it, so what. For me, one tweak is more
than enough unless I really like the recipe and want to make it
perfect.

I like it. Not sure why people don't like BTM. He's fine. Remember
when Jacques Pepin had his DD on the show? She played the roll of
dummy and asked the same questions many new cooks would ask anywhere
but here. BTM plays the same roll on that show.

Why should I care? Everything he says is scripted, so if they wanted
him to come across any differently, he would.

Bought the 2014 edition "Cookbook Recipes for Two". It includes not
just recipes but some cooking tips, tricks, and a few explanations why
plus a list of recommended equipment for the kitchen and the name and
model number of what "won" their tests. I find that info just as
useful as the recipes themselves which are tailored to serve two
people. The biggest wish I have is that (in hindsight) I would like to
have been able to buy these recipes as a digital database for use in a
recipe program, but ATK does not offer it in that format.

For those who do like the nerd/geek factor, I'd recommend this book.
My cooking experience is boiling water, and I like their presentation.
so your mileage may vary YMMV

I've got two? I think. Vegetables and Grilling. Nice recipes, pretty
pictures, big book. I prefer cookbooks that are useful in the
kitchen, the kind where the binding is flexible, the size doesn't use
up counter real estate. I also like recipe-dense books and these are
not.

Know what you mean. I have a coffee table type cookbook which is so large, and so beautifully illustrated that it will NEVAH enter my kitchen, let alone rest on my counter. If anything, I'll jot notes from it on a scrap of papyrus. In case of a fire, I feel I need to grab that along with my first folio Shakespeare.
