Default Fall is soup weather.

I love Fall. I love soup. And Fall is soup making weather to me. When I was at the grocery store there was a nice portion of chuck steak in the "used meat" bin. I immediately thought "soup" so today I'm making a hearty beef and vegetable soup, minestrone style, only I'm not putting in any pasta. Lower carb you know. I calculated it out and it comes to 5 carbs per cup. It's not quite ready but I'm starving cause the house is smelling gooooood.

--------------

we are having an Indian Summer (ooh, can I even say that anymore??) so soup
production is postponed for at least a few weeks. But, yeah, I am eager for
some nice comfort soup.

I'm itching to make soup but it's just not cooling off here. Temp. is still
in the 70's. Every day I am hopeful because I see 60's ahead which is still
warm here for this time of the year but then they change it to 70's again.
I have soaked navy beans in the freezer and some cooked ground beef. Will
add other vegetables and probably some rice or pasta.

It's hot in CA too, but I made some chicken soup and kept the AC going.

Temps in the 70's *is* Fall here in SC. I've had the windows open
the last couple of days. Nice break in the utility bill. There's been
a nice breeze outside most of the time. The humidity dropped
considerably so it actually feels like Fall. It's supposed to get back
up in the 80's next week. If the humidity comes back I'll have to run
the AC again.

I'm enjoying the nice cool temps. It finally stopped raining so it's
perfect weather for sitting on the patio with a book. I even put on
a short sleeve shirt and long cotton pants today rather than wearing
shorts and a tank top.

We just got back from a bad day of shopping and the house is hot! Went all
the way to Winco to get one item that they have a lower price on and they
had none. They also didn't have the fruit that I needed. So we stopped at
Safeway where the Coke products were $2.75 but you had to buy 4 to get that
price. And of course they only had 2 of what I wanted. So I also got 2
Sprite Zero which I don't even need right now. They also didn't have the
other product that I wanted. So... Tomorrow I will have to go to yet
another Safeway. And perhaps some other store as well. Not happy.

I've got a couple of ziploc bags full of miscellaneous chicken bones,
celery ends, onion skins, parsnip pieces, and carrot tops ready to go
for chicken stock.

I'll probably make the stock 'round about Thursday. Then I'll start
thinking about soup.

The baseball game was on last night and hubby said they were playing
in Washington. The pitchers were always blowing into their hands,
hubby said it was to keep warm. People in the stands and on the
sidelines had their hoods up & gloves on. I was totally confused
because you're constantly saying you're in a heat wave. We finally
got that figured out. Who the H says Washington without saying DC
too? He does.

Sounds nice, it's supposed to be 90 or so for the week, so no respite yet. I
don't believe there is a fall in CA. :-)

We only get a few months of this. I rarely get to wear sweaters, much
less a coat. I'm thinking I should do some grilling tomorrow.

The cow does not seem to have enough grey-cells to make a phone call
prior to leaving its miserable, poorly-built, no-walls, so-called house
to learn if the stores have enough product to satisfy the herds'
consumption of processed foods and diet soda-pops. Don't forget, it's
stated several times that it consumes at least 12 sodas every single
day, if not more.

Our temps have been in the 70's and I believe that our baseball is played
outdoors. Lemme check. Well, I stand corrected on that too! Safeco Field
and that is outdoors but it certainly wasn't cold at all yesterday. It was
74 when we got home last night. That's not hot either but it's far warmer
than usual for this time of year. It's currently 80 in the house.

When I moved from here, they were still playing baseball in the Kingdome and
that was indoors. I haven't been to a game since.

Yeah. It is the Seattle Mariners so I think people would say Seattle and
not Washington.

Thirty nine degrees at the moment in the 'burbs north of Bahstun. Almost
time for that first batch of split pea with smoked ham hocks. You know,
the stuff that cools into a gelatinous mass that you can cut with a knife
but gets better each time you reheat it?

I have last-of-season tomatoes and cucumbers overflowing fridge and
countertop. I'm going to make a huge batch of Pico De Gallo and a
huge batch of sour cream cucumber salad. Our daytime temps are at 80F
this week but cool off to 45-50F at night.

I don't either, unfortunately I can't control it, but I can control the temp
in my house. I'm beginning to feel like a houseplant though, because there's
been so much crap in the air that I don't venture out for long on my walks.

We cruised out of Long Beach, CA during the first week of May and it was
cold enough, that you had to wear pants during the day.

Winter is about 5 days long. Drops to about 75 or so then we're back up
into the 90s around November. One Christmas was 95F. When I was a kid
though, winters used to be quite chilly. So cold in fact that the orange
growers had to keep their trees warm with smudge pots. I remember wearing a
jackt on Halloween most every year. I have not seen a day cold enough for
my breath to fog in easily 20 years.

Julie, travel = gas for the car. You did not save anything by going to
multiple stores. Gas is 3.15-3.60 a gallon depending on where you are
this week. The average US car gets 15 miles per gallon. If you
traveled 1.5 miles (then back for a round trip of 3) to save 3cents on
a can of something, you spent more getting there by FAR than you
'saved'.

It's called false savings. It's regrettably common when the car is
fueled by another because they do not notice it.

I don't even know what she is replying to. If it is the trip to get the
soda, there was no wasted gas. The whole trip started to *get* gas which
was at Costco. We can not rely on our normal Costco for gas as they are
redoing the pumps and that won't be done until Nov. 1. So we went to the
one that is just before Winco. Just before meaning not even a block away.
The Safeway was on one of the main streets we took to drove home. So...
There was no wasted gas whatever. And I don't think that gas is $3.60 here.
I think it is more.

I would *never* drive to a store just to be driving to a store unless I
really needed something or it was a big stock up. I always plan my route to
make as many necessary stops as I can at one time. And normally when I stop
at the store, I am stopping on the way to or from somewhere else.

We live about 17 miles away from town. I have calculated that it takes
approximately $8 of gas for a round trip.

My husband used to drive to town just about every day to pick up some
small thing or other, but I cured him of that habit by pointing out
that this was running to over $200 a month.

Now, I keep a running list of groceries and other stuff, and he adds
to it whenever he needs something. I do all of the shopping on the
days I go to the gym. And sometimes he drives me there, does all the
shopping himself, and picks me up when I'm finished.

Of course we bought more items! But there was one specific thing that my
daughter wanted and I told her that she needed to get it there as the price
was cheaper. It is something that she will tell me about other stores and
then I cringe because other stores are usually $1 more for this item. So
when we go to Winco, I tell her to stock up. But to her, stocking up is
buying 2! It's an item that will keep for many months so I would prefer her
to buy 10-12 when we find it at a good price.

Winco isn't cheaper on everything and that particular day that I mentioned
was a really bad shopping trip as they didn't have much of anything I
needed. I don't usually go there on Sunday and I don't think I will again.
Seems that Thursday is the best day to go.

We also went there because daughter needed gas in her car and the Costco
where we normally get gas is iffy now. They are down to three pumps and if
the line is too backed up, you can't get in it. They have a man standing
there directing traffic. She tried twice one time and no go. I got lucky
the last time and got gas in my car.

So... I told her we could either get the gas on Saturday at the Costco near
my mom's place, then go to Safeway or... We could wait till Sunday and go
to the one by Winco to get the item that she wanted. She opted for that.
And it didn't work. The other items that I bought could have been bought
anywhere and they weren't necessarily any cheaper at Winco or not
significantly cheaper. But the thing that daughter wanted *is* much cheaper
when they have it.

No, I've seen it for years. False savings due to not calculating in
also the gas price. I was not addressing '1 can' but a habit that seems
to save say, 1.50$ but costs gas of 2$ or more to obtain. Add the gas
cost in. Believe me, you can save better if you add that in.

Makes sense Doris! Some of us have shopping closer but not all.

I'd rather shop less often and have 200$ of T-bone ;-)
