Default Meat Prices

I knew the price of beef was going up but really! I'm flipping through
the Publix weekly ad... pork butt, bone-in, once again $2.99/lb. Also
beef cubed Steaks, $5.49 lb. What?!

To me, cubed steak is a cheap cut of meat used for making things like
country fried steak. I can pound the hell out of a better cut of steak
and accomplish the same thing. The ad says it's "Premium Choice Beef"
Whatever the heck that means.

Chicken is still through the roof. I think I'll concentrate on what
sort of fish I can buy.

Anymore. I just use meat, if any, as flavoring in most meals. A little
sausage in some bean soap, a little chicken in a bean buritto, etc.
Rarely have meat as the main portion of a meal, as I used to. At this
rate I'll soon be a vegetarian egain.

We've been watching too... but we always buy meat on sale.

Chickens were just on sale for 77 cents a pound and we bought some for
the freezer. Pork ribs were $1.47 a pound but we already have some.
Ground Chuck (80/20) is on sale for $2.47 a pound and again, we stocked
up (Burritos for supper tonight).

Good for you, Ken. I doubt I'll ever stop having it as mainstay. I
like lots of vegetables and legumes, etc. But I can't see giving up
meat. I can find other cuts that aren't ridiculously priced and
probably don't need to be "tenderized".

The Fed's "Quantitative Easing" which is still going on and shows no
signs of stopping continues to devalue the dollar, so the cost of pretty
much everything is going up as the Fed effectively taxes your savings
and earnings away to prop up their house of cards.

The tiny amount of QE that was done back in the great depression had 15
years of negative impact on the economy (per NPR's economists), this
completely unprecedented QE which is many orders of magnitude more than
the GD QE can be expected to impact the economy for many decades.

The better explanation is the drought in the Midwest that has reduced feed
crops thus raising meat prices. Same in California.

Pete

I don't know whether your economic illiteracy or ability to ignore
what is going on around you is most annoying. In any case, OE and the
rest of your imaginary hob-gobblins were not the reason that 80% of
California has been in a severe drought for a couple of years, Kansas
(for example) is set to have a record low wheat harvest, and your
buddies the industrial meat producers have managed to infect tens of
millions of pigs with a fatal virus resulting in the death of up to
75% of some producers newborn. This won't be evident to you, so let
me make the point that these all have massive influence on prices. No
feed, no winter vegetables, no healthy newborn pigs, all contribute to
higher prices. And the pigs don't read the Wall Street Journal or
listen to that innumerate pretend economist Niall Ferguson babble on
NPR. (where he is save from criicism)

Yeah. Most of my meals are meatless and I try to serve meatless or light on
the meat such as a little ground beef in spaghetti sauce to the others at
least twice a week.

Not a solution in Massachusetts, at least. If you go into a supermarket
looking to buy fish around here, better bring a cosigner. Farm raised
salmon fillet is around $12 a pound, and I've seen sword and tuna as high
as $20+.

I would not pay 5 cents for farm-raised fish.

If I lived on an island (which I did) I'd have fishing gear (I do),
and I'd catch my own fish (which I did lots).

We have farm raised fish labelled "product of China." I do not even go near
that end of the store.

Tell that to my local grocery store. The price of chicken is higher
than beef more often than not. Definitely cheaper than pork.
