Default Cut tomatoes in half quickly

I don't usually watch videos, or cut little tomatoes but this is a cool way
to cut them!

Great idea, just make sure it's a sharp knife. Thanks for posting this. :-)

......'cept'in, now your got an extra plate to wash, which negates
the time you saved. You still may be ahead by a little, but is it
enough to give a rat's ass?

My time saver tip is, use those cheapo Ginsu/Aero/etc infomercial
serrated knives. Go through a tomato like Grant took Richmond. My
apologies to the Southern Belles of rfc. Tip o' the hat, ladies.

Same here, I have a very fine, serrated Wusthoff knife that's as good
as I've come across for tomatoes, or anything you want very
thin/accurate slices from. It's a bit like a miniature bread knife,
only with a much finer blade.

I actually bought a tomato knife. I think it's the Khun Rikon brand. Works
great.

A simple rinse with hot water from the faucet would be enough of a "wash" and wouldn't take any time at all.

I waited to buy a Ginsu until they were down to 99 cents. It was actually a
really good knife. But sadly, I got rid of my mishmash of knives when my
dad sent me a new set in a block. But they turned out to be crap.

Many years ago my mother bought me a Ginsu knife from a TV ad. She
bought one for herself, also. I still have that knife and it's as sharp
today as it was the first day I had it. I love that knife and use it
for all kinds of things. I'd buy another if I could find them.

This method has been around a good while and you don't need two plates to get the job done. One held on top of the tomatoes to keep them from rolling around is all that's needed.

Well yeah, but you would have the mess on the counter or wherever you cut
them. I like the two plate idea, simple and mess free.

Yep. I'll bet this method would work for other things too although nothing
comes immediately to mind.

I'll try this stunt on my wife. I'll go into the the kitchen for a few
minutes and return with a plate of food. She's frequently surprised
because I can cook so rapidly. It's my new shtick.

When I first saw your post and the link, I thought oh yeah, another stupid kitchen tip that no one will use. SURPRISE, it is a cool tip and will work great next summer for my Greek tomato salad!

Will have to try that, especially as I have lots of cherry tomatoes
right now... will have to find the right kind of plates too.

I guess they would need to be pretty flat.

Yes, pretty flat but also with the right amount of rising/lip near the
edges to hold the tomatoes in...

It's a cute idea but by the time I would get set up I could have already halved
all the tomatoes.

You must be slow as molasses in the kitchen if you can't plunk a plate down on a bunch of tomatoes and slice through them in one motion.

Doesn't presentation count? That method doesn't orient the tomatoes
so that they are all sliced in the same direction... I prefer them
sliced stem to stern, not crosswise so all their juices run out. I
rarely slice cherry tomatoes anyway.

You'll have to discuss this with sf, she's the one hung up on 'presentation' so it will 'look pretty.' But I have to admit I rarely slice a cherry tomato in half myself. I guess a person could putz around with the tomatoes to make sure they are all sitting up straight. But if I want smaller bite size pieces I just buy the smaller grape tomatoes.

I agree. I prefer cherry tomatoes to be sliced top to bottom so that the
stem parts are on one edge where they are less obvious. I never thought
that slicing cherry tomatoes was that big a chore. As the unhelpful one
pointed out upthread it takes time to get set up. You have to go to the
cupboard and get two plates. Nobody mentioned that those plates also
have to be washed. I have having trouble seeing it as a time saver, and
I don't think the results would be worth it.

For those who commented about the downside of the involvement of plates, the plate-free method, 0:25 in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V33A2aEgHcw

Wow! I like how he sort of supremed that tomato! Beats the heck out of the
often used method of cutting in half and squeezing the seeds out. That
would be perfect for Chinese tomato beef.

I had forgotten that I somewhat recently got a Khun Rikon tomato knife.
With it, I was able to slice a tomato about as thinly as that chef did. It
worked equally well on a red onion, yielding paper thin slices.

Now I suppose someone here will complain about the fact that the chef had a
glove on. But that's what people here do!

Why would anyone complain that the chef had a glove on? I would be more apt
to complain if he didn't.

Well, they were complaining about having to use a plate. I am pretty sure
most of us here don't normally cook with gloves on. I could see that as a
complaint. But I would have to buy the gloves! Then I would have to put it
on! And take it off! And throw it away! And take out the trash!
