Default Green Bean casserole

As some may know, I had been seeing 'green bean casserole' included in the
menus here for Thanksgiving and asked about it. I understand that some folk
like to use soup for the sauce, but I don't like that soup and sf was kind
enough to post a recipe which didn't use the soup.

I changed it a bit, but only so far as making it all from scratch.

So, we had it for lunch today and we really enjoyed it)) I made it all
from scratch ... fried my onions ... the bread was my own (wholemeal with
added seeds) and I used heavy cream and chicken broth with garlic and
seasoning for the sauce I made half the amount in the recipe sf posted but
there was still a lot left. I asked DH if he wanted me to throw it away or
save it and he said noooooo save it, I will eat it later) Can't get a
better recommendation that that!!!

So, big success) Thanks sf

Sounds nice! I'm glad you were able to adapt it to your tastes.

One of the things I discovered when I came here was a recipe for Green
Bean Casserole. Mom had written it down and taped it to the inside of a
kitchen cupboard. (Yes, it's the one that calls for cream of mushroom
soup.) The recipe is still there on the inside cupboard door. I don't
have the heart to take it down.

Oddly, Green Bean Casserole was not something she ever served us, at
Thanksgiving or any other time.

Good! I enjoy hearing you've made something you were unfamiliar with
and liked it. Especially since people make green bean casserole sound
like a joke. Campbell's soup company is credited with creating it,
sure. But cooks were bound to come up with homemade versions.

I might try making my own version, as you did. Not the one with the
canned soup. But to be honest, it doesn't really sound like something
I'd glom onto.

Oh, I don't think so. I suspect my dad asked her to make it one year.
She may have asked a neighbor for the recipe. It's hand-written on a
piece of note paper, not on a card in her recipe box.

I don't fancy it with the soup because I don't like that soup but my version
is *very* good) I can't say the beans stood out and I will try it with
other veggies as a base

I remember my mother serving it to us when I was young. We had recently
visited my great uncle at his farm and he had some pigs. We watched him
slop the pigs. When I saw the green casserole it looked just like that
pig slop.

In my mother's later years she re-introduced it, serving it at
Christmas. It was much better than I had remembered (remembered
expecting it to be like?). It was quite tasty. Now I understand why it
has become a TG tradition for many people.
