So, I go down to Safeway to buy a 2lb pkg of their thick slice bacon
(which is really quite good) at an almost $5 discount. Yay. But,
upon getting home, I see from the receipt I've only gotten $3 off.
WTF? knowing how smarmy Safeway is about their notoriously deceptive
ads, I read the flyer again. Sure enough, the extra $2 discount is
with a "U", as in "just for U" discount thingie, of which I've never
heard of. So, go to their website and get telco support number and
call them. Sure enough, now they have extra discounts if you are
willing to officially register and provide a valid email address for
them to further intrude on and track your life. Not gonna happen.

why don't you set up an anonymous e-mail account and post it here so we can
all use it when we go to Safeway?

You have to register for the card. If you leave the card at home, they will
use your phone number to match it.

give a fake phone number and share it. I use my dad's phone number. One I
used my Uncle's.

? In my city, C&C and Winco (and Costco) provide the freshest, widest
variety at lowest cost. I see no point in spending the most for the
least and poorest quality selection.

Yeah, you definitely have to have the Just For U to get some of the buys,
and you have to click on the deals through your computers to add, or by
using the computer in their stores. What a bunch of baloney. Just put it on
sale, and forget the cards that keep track of buying habits. Personally, I
am trying not to shop at stores that require a card to get the discounts
even though Safeway does have good buys with the Just for U discounts.
S-Mart and Smart and Final are about the only stores that don't require
them, now all of the drugstores in town CVS, Rite-Aid, and Walgreen's
require them too, it's just maddening.

What drives me crazy about all the drug stores is bad enough you
have to use your card to get the sale, but they all have these
irritating points/rewards programs. I don't want any damn
"Bucks" or "Reward Points" or whatever. I hate games like that
with a passion. And then you see what you need on sale but you'd
better hope you need it a lot because half the time it's buy one,
get one half price.

Used to be fun to shop in drugstores.

Yes! Walgreens gives me that receipt for a good amount off of my next order
but it has to be used in 24 or 48 hours or something like that. Seeing as
how Walgreens is not convenient to me and I do not do a lot of brick and
mortar drugstore shopping, I am not likely to go back to redeem it. Plus
their is not likely to be anything else I would need to buy.

Right Aid sometimes does the same but I think you have a week or two to
redeem. You still have to bring the danged receipt back in. Um... I've
got your card! Load it to the card! I did actually redeem one of those.
Daughter needed some sort of school supplies. Can't remember now what but
we went there and got them.

Hubby and I have bad colds, so I went to Walgreens and saw that buy
one, get half off another. If I didn't feel so cr*ppy, I would have
gone a few more miles down the road to my HMO and bought generic from
them. As it is, I spent easily 5 times more than I would have spent
there just because the drugstore was close and convenient.

Safeway pulls cr*p like that too - buy two frozen items, get a third
for free. This is an urban area, how many people have stand alone
freezers to store all the stuff they don't need in? That's why I buy
what few frozen items that I do buy at Trader Joe's. I like what they
sell (petit peas - fire roasted corn) and I don't have to buy a
truckload just to get a decent price.

Yes, and they have jacked the prices of the two frozen items first. They
built a Walgreen's in my backyard where there used to be a lovely nursery,
they're handy, but I hate shopping there and try to avoid it as much as
possible. In the first place, they're high on most things, and in the second
place they very seldomly have what they advertise.

Albertsons new thing is that you must buy three or four or some set number
of whatever it is to get the sale price. But it isn't always this way! You
really do have to read the ad very carefully. When I bought those Hormel
meats, you had to buy 10 of the qualifying items. I didn't need 10 Hormel
items but I couldn't tell from the ad what the other qualifying items were.
I thought I could figure it out when I got to the store but I couldn't. So
I wound up buying 10! We still haven't eaten them up. I bought them
thinking that they would be something that husband could fix for himself
when I wasn't home. But he hasn't touched them.

And the particular store that I usually shop at is bad with the signage.
They once left an old sign up on the Coke products. I protested when they
didn't ring up as the sign said. Actually that was very confusing because
IIRC there were three different signs all with different prices. Of course
the clerk kept denying that price but I took him back there and showed him.
All the while, that line was being held up. There was no date on the sign
and it was there so they had to honor the price.

And what about all those mile long coupons that spew forth from the register? I don't even read them - they're all for stuff I never buy and/or the exp date is in the near future.

I don't schlep loyalty cards either. I intone my phone number and if it works, then fine. My two major supermkts don't have any type of rewards system. But I don't like most of the BOGOs. Mostly, they are convenience junk I don't buy.

I think I get a better deal by paying for my groceries with a rebate credit card than by clipping coupons or loading up on BOGO stuff.

Publix has a huge chart now proving that they are cheaper than Walmart, but I didn't study the figures. I'm sure either chain can play the game, and I doubt anyone is is going to take the time to prove them wrong.

Years ago, I made a list of ten known brand items, shopped on the same day at the two major mkts in town, and altho the 20 prices varied, the total was to the penny the same.

I have no problem with my local stores knowing my basic ID, I receive
their sale circulars via email and enjoy saving money by receiving
their coupons via snail mail. If you pay with plastic they know
everything about you anyway. Those who are behind on paying their
bills are the ones attempting to hide from their local businesses. I
like getting my discounts. I think the main reason that stores bother
with keeping tabs and issue discounts is to maintain the local
shoppers... businesses have been attracting regular patrons with
discounts for as long as I can remember... my mom would shop the same
stores and would receive more than her dollar's worth. I think
there's a benefit to knowing your market's employees and their knowing
you. Only those who don't pay their bills are who are ascared. Pay
your debts and you don't need to worry.

That's not at all true. I don't owe anybody. I just think it's ridiculous.

But...some of the other stores that don't use the cards have everyday prices
that are quite a bit lower than the ones that do. Some of these stores jack
the prices to offer them lower with the card, same thing with a lot of the
BOGO.

Yes! I don't check prices for everything. But one thing I refuse to pay
regular price for is soda. I do check prices on that. And I try to go to
Winco once or twice a month. They do not advertise anything and yet they do
have sales. And overall their prices are better than the other stores. But
not always. I went there when my husband wanted Slimfast because I thought
it would be cheaper. Mistake! Turned out that Walmart had the cheapest
price but I had to order online. They had a package deal where you had to
choose from an assortment of things. So you did have to buy something like
8 or 10 things to get the good prices.

I don't believe that, then everyone would shop at those lower priced
stores and those that charged more would go out of business, fast.

ALL stores use the MSRP as a base for the sale, but I've yet to see a
BOGO sale where the item costs more than the regular price, there's
still always a substantial savings... the only time there's no saving
is when you buy an item you don't use. Retail stores are always
running sales that increases their volume, they pay less from the
wholesaler after a volume point too. If you ran your own retail
business you'd do exactly the same... you obviously never worked for
yourself, good chance you never worked for someone else either...

You know what? I really don't care if you believe it or not, and some people
that shop at higher end places like Raley's etc., don't care what they're
charging at other stores, they like that store and they shop there. My MIL
was one of them, she always paid higher prices because she liked the brand
names and also the store. This is my last word on this with you because you
seem to want to put everyone in the slot that fits you.

Winco has lower prices but I have to drive 6 miles to get there. Although
there is a Costco almost next door, that particular Costco doesn't sell the
bread that we eat. Also an Ace Hardware along the way but I don't need to
shop there often. I also don't like to drive 6 miles to only go to one
store. But I will do it when we need a pretty big stock up. It's just not
worth it for me to drive thre for a few things.

Mostly I make do during the week at the Albertsons that is near the dance
studio because I am already there.

I do shop at some other stores like Whole Foods, PCC or Central Market that
do not necessarily have the best prices. I will shop there if I need one or
two things and am in the area or if I need something that only they sell.
But I still prefer to buy most of my food at cheap prices.

Winco also seems to be putting the military commissary out of business.
They put in a new one just miles away. Last time we went to the commissary,
we bought very little. Just a small amount of needed produce, some toilet
paper and a very few other things that we needed right away. Overall their
prices were higher than Winco. I also noticed that their stock was way
down. Much less selection than they used to have and several aisles had
nothing but large cases of paper goods. No long lines either like in the
old days.

Stores often have what they call loss leaders. They will sell things that
make them no money or that cause them to lose money. They might put a limit
as to how much you can buy. And they have to pick these items carefully.
Needs to be something that people really want and need. At K Mart, such
items were socks and clothes hangers. But a grocery store wouldn't
necessarily sell those things.

I shop in an Albertsons's chain and they also dropped the card a few
months ago. Just one less thing to bother with. Maybe one day my
wallet will be lighter when I no longer have to carry all those cards.

One one shopping trip I saw the cashier wait for a guy to fish out
his store card at the place that no longer requires a card. I guess
they must still have some use. Perhaps he was writing a check though
I didn't notice that.

I was told that you could use the card for gas rewards, although I don't
know of any of their gas stations. Not sure that still applies though. I
do still see people all the time who present their cards and act shocked
when they hear that they no longer take them.

Lucky doesn't require a card to get sale prices, but they still have a
card that is connected to gas rewards. I'd be more interested if I
used the gas brand they're hooked up with.

Yes, they're mostly hooked up to Shell around here. I don't buy Shell.

I use Shell and shop at Giant for the gas rewards. It used to be much
more useful for me, but since last year I don't drive much, so a tank
can last me a month. My gas points tend to expire before I can use them
all.

There must be some reason the cashier didn't tell the guy not
to bother, though I'm not aware of any promotions the store has.

Gassing up the car is not my favorite thing and I'd rather not
be tied to a particular brand if I can help it. Of course most
people don't mind.

We aren't tied to it. It just so happens that the brand Safeway
partners with here has a station close to my house that we use anyway
and it also happens to have the best price of the bunch. We use
premium gas, so it's nice to get 20˘ off every now and then.

I try to get gas at Costco. It's a lot cheaper and there is an attendant
outside on duty at all times. So I feel more secure that there won't be a
skimmer there. I believe a skimmer at a gas station is how they got my card
info. the last time. I had to use an unfamiliar station to gas up my rental
car.

Can't say I've ever gotten an email from Safeway. They keep track of
me through my card and I take advantage of their discounted gas.
Win-win. They must think I have a Duggar type family because my kids
use my telephone number to get the discount when they shop at Safeway
too.

For the few stores around here that haven't dropped the silly "loyalty
card" nonsense, I either give them a random phone number, or for some I
use a card that I got but never "registered" or in any way gave them any
information for.

I am not registered with Safeway. None around here in Brooklyn. But I have
many loyalty cards. None of them send me e-mail.

Yes. This is why you don't give them a random phone number. If you don't
have your card you simply give them your number. And I find when I'm at a
self-service checkout it is easier to key in my number than to dig into my
wallet and find the card photocopy.

Photocopy you ask? Yes. All of the cards are overly thick. So I've made
photocopies of them and carry card-sized sheets of paper in my wallet
instead.

They are offering to pay you for your email address. You refused so
they don't pay you.
