Default Laundry concoction: as someone requested

Grate finely 1/3 bar Fels Naptha soap into a large bowl

Bring almost to a boil 6 C water.

Add to the Fels and stir well ( I use large metal whisk).

Add 1/2 C washing soda and 1/2 C borax

Mix well again.

In a large bucket ( I use a cat litter bucket and this will be the
storage container), pour 4 C very hot water.

Add in the soap mixture from the bowl. Mix well.

Add 1 gallon PLUS 6 C water and stir again.

Let sit 24 hours. Stir occasionally - it WILL thicken.

Use 1/2 C per wash load. Cheap and should last months.

Interesting- where do you find this Fel's soap? I have never heard of
it...

The laundry aisle - tucked way up or down in a corner. Red,yellow and
white wrapper. It's prob. all women had 90 years ago, with a
washboard. Long live Fels.
At one time they did make a powdered soap, but haven't seen it in
years.

I know this was awhile ago, but I just got done making this. So far, I
like how it came out. I love the fresh smell, and am surprised at the
texture of it. I am doing my first load right now, so I am anxious to
see how it worked. My husband and son both have issues with some
detergents like Tide- I think it's the perfumey stuff they add to it.
We are trying to be prepared for when the big one hits here, so this
is a great addition for our supplies- thank you for posting this!

You're welcome! I spent 3.99 each for the washing soda and the borox.
The fels soap was easy to find, and it was 1.39 a bar, so I bought 2.
So for 11-12 bucks, I will be set for a long time!

If it feels 'chunky', break up the whole mess with your hands or
sometimes I use a huge plastic whisk. I am on the same box of borax
and washing soda since I don't know when. You can see how long a
bucketful will last. With two of us, I think a batch lasts months,
altho I've never dated it.

Clothes shud feel nice and soft - and no need for dryer sheets or an
of that stuff.

Let us know how you like it.

Oh - I add it when the washer is filling and let a lot of water run
into the cup too. Swish it around so no globs of the stuff land on
say dark clothes.

I used up the last bit of All that I had, and so used half and half
for the first load, so the second one using all homemade is in the
dryer now. And you are right about the softness factor- I noticed it
on the first load. I used the All bottle for the new stuff, so maybe
the spout will help with any globs...will report back when the dryer
is done.

Ok, here is my report- I like it as far as I can tell! This was a load
of dark stuff- jeans, husband's robe, etc. Nothing was visibly dirty,
just used. Everything felt very nice, especially the robe. I would
give this a thumbs up- thanks Kalmia!

That's a great idea. The empty liquid detergent bottle will allow
you to shake up the mix before you
measure it out in the cap. I like those bottles where the cap drains
back down into the bottle and you
don't have any drips down the side of the container.

There is a reason why detergents are used instead of soaps. Soap
leaves residue that makes dirt cling. Soap doesn't work well in hard
water. Yes, washing soda and borax are useful. I always add a little
borax. Also, Fels stinks. If such a "concoction" was really better,
then someone would pre-mix it and sell it. I'm real ass frugal. I
buy store brand detergent, fragrance free, and I do add borax.
Washing soda is good too, but using soap instead of detergent does not
result in clean clothes for a cheaper price. If you want to save
money, invest in a HE front loader. They use so much less water that
you can warm rinse for cheaper than you can cold rinse in a top
loader.
