Default Olive Garden

Hi friends:

I just come to USA in January from Indonesia for higher studies. Two
American things I enjoy very much are the football and Italian food.
Yesterday I eat in the restaurant call Olive Garden. The food was so
delicious! Where I can get recipe for the Italian dishes they serve?

Thanks

I went there once. I had genuine Italian mashed potatoes on the side. I
asked the waitress if risotto or polenta was an option. "What?"

The Italian food will be better at an independently run restaurant.
Think of Mamma and Pappa in the kitchen.
Olive Garden is just a big chain and all the food is much too salty
and NOT made with love.

Believe it or not, there are places in the US where Olive Garden is the
ONLY choice for Italian food and Taco Bell for Mexican. Everyone is not
fortunate enough to live in a multi-ethnic, authentic food paradise.

If he enjoyed the food, so be it.

It's like I've always said, I've been to NYC and ate the pizza there
and it was delicious. But I know you can find pizza just as good by
going to out of the way mom and pop places in Savannah or Santa Fe or
Spokane or Topeka or Toledo. Keep away from the chain places whenever
possible and look for the family run restaurants.

Unpossible - NYC pizza sucks - it is the Taco Bell of the pizza world

And even if the "family" is Italian, that doesn't mean they are actually
cooking Italian dishes. Just a couple days ago I watched a TV program about
italians in New Jersey in the 30's, it talked about this miner who came from
Sicily and knew nothing about cooking and set up a restaurant where he
cooked what he remembered from his mother and grandmother kitchen. Problem
is: since a man never helped women cooking, he did know zero about those
recipes. Random dishes, just that. It's very similar to the chinese people
setting up restaurants here in Italy: people from southern china who worked
in anything except cooking, so we get dishes of fake chinese cuisine made by
real chinese people.

So why did he have a name tag that said "Sergei"?

I agree completely! I wouldn't go to Olive Garden, but if I'd never tasted
(americanized) Italian food and he liked it, that's fine with me. However,
I do think this is a troll.

Seems like most ppl here frown on Olive Garden. I went there once and I
really enjoyed the meal. I'm very easy to please though. :0

First of all, I am very happy for all the responses, especially Mr. "I
not -I" for the link to http://tinyurl.com/olivegardencopycats. Today I
plan to make the "Olive Garden Pasta E Fagioli Soup in a Crock Pot"
recipe at night. It sound yummy and I think all the recipes items are
easily available at the grocery mart. I will e-mail to this chatrum the
results from my first try at Italian cooking!!

Sorry, I do not understand what you mean by "NOT made with love" (my
English is not so good - sorry). The salt was OK when I eat and the
waittress was very lovely too, although I don't think she is Italian!

Also, I am very impressed that these forums are so active. I check some
of the other e-mails and so many interesting things.

Aww, we could tell by the faked broken English a la Charlie Chan.
But, I like take chance to say bad word on Olive Garden.

Hi Victor!

When you say "football", I assume you mean real football not the
soccer thing, right? Here at rsfc we love both college football and
professional football (if you are a Southeastern Conference fan they
are the same thing, though! Ha Ha!) so you have come to the right
place to talk football!

Welcome Victor!

Tanks unklbob! Yes yes yes - I mean the American football. In Indonesia
we have good soccer team but very corrupt. They loose to that Arab team
on purpose and I am sure there was money that change hands. Anyway, I
only watched the professional football so far - my favourite team is
Pittsburg Steelers.

Hey your in America now, Vic! Don't misspell words like a silly
British person--we don't add the superfluous "u" to words like "color"
and "favorite", and Stealers is also missplet!

I'm sure you'll catch on!

LOL, soccer is like that in half of the world. I'm from Italy and our TV
news spend half the time talking about corruption in soccer. Last week it
emerged that a top league player got paid 300.000 euros to score in his own
team's goal, thus giving the victory to the opponents

My father, sister and I went to a place on The Hill here in St Louis
MO for dinner, called Mama's On The Hill:

http://www.mamasonthehill.com/

reputed to be the place where a STL favorite "toasted raviioi" was
started (see their website.) I had gotten a Groupon for lunch there a
couple of weeks ago and had the baked lasagna and a Caesar salad (with
real yummy not too salty anchovies!) and was so impressed I suggested
we go for our monthy Family Night dinner. So we did! YUM!! I again got
the Caesar salad and seafood linguini (took 1/2 home), and a canoli
for dessert.

Real Italian food in a real Italian neighborhoos here in STL! Can't
beat that! If you are in STL I highly recommend them!

I beg to differ... and potatoes with large hard nipples are the most
flavorful.

Here's a clue:

1) The skin of the potato is a large component of it's flavor.
2) Small potatoes have much higher surface area to volume ratio,
i.e. more skin per bite.
3) More skin per bite = more flavor. QED
