Default Reply from NZ mussel producer about shells opening

I found the exchange that I had with Aquaculture NZ about
the safety of frozen mussels whose shells do not open:

Subject: frozen mussels that do not open
This may be a silly question...

I have had a few of your mussels not open when cooked properly. Is this

a problem (as it is with live mussels) or can they all be eaten? Are there

any guidelines for this concern?

The response:

Hi .....

If mussels do not open when heated then you should not eat them. Instead
discard all unopened mussels

I hope that answers your query if you require further information please
feel free to contact me

Regards

Sounds pretty definite and simple to me! :-)

Well, you have to remember the source, which is a seller of mussels!!
So from their perspective, the more mussels you discard, the more
replacement mussels you'll hopefully purchase!

....but I am a bit more squeamish than thee.

They are whole mussels par-cooked and flash frozen, then
vacuum packed. They should all open as stated. Some
of them don't open. Discussion is as to whether they are
good anyhow. Steve says yes, I say no. Aquaculture says
no. Find what we are talking about on www.greenshell.com .
Fascinating reading for MLK day. Cheers, and if you know
anything about this praytell.
