Default strawberries in November?

Just got back from the vegetable store where I bought a pound of
sweet, local strawberries for 99¢. Wow! I thought they might be from
south of the border or south of the equator... but they're from
Salinas. Color me surprised.

It's been a weird year for late produce here. We're still getting
tomatoes. They're not turning on the vine but are still getting
bigger.

Hopefully when she was a teacher her subjects didn't involve geography
or weather zones. Years ago I had some fresh corn in Florida on New
Years Eve. Some guy was selling it out of the back of a pick-up truck
and it was fabulous.

I have some green ones too, like you said, getting bigger. No frost in
the 5 day forecast yet, so I'm gonna leave 'em grow and ripen.

I was able to get local raspberries well into the fall, so that
doesn't surprise me as much as it might have.

Raspberries? Did they cost you an arm and a leg? In my area,
raspberries & blueberries are rarely down where I'll shell out to buy
them although I do treat myself from time to time. I was surprised
because those strawberries were marked at a normal price - 99¢ lb at
this time of year. Being available and being local & available at a
decent price at this time of year are two completely different things
AFAIC.

No way they'll get ripe here just hopefully bigger. We have to put
them in a warm window to get red now.

Fall-bearing raspberry varieties have been around forever, though.
Day-neutral strawberries were only developed in the mid-late 1980s.
Until those came on the market, commercial strawberries were the
June-bearing varieties, meaning those grown in the Northern Hemisphere
were available only in the spring/early summer.
