Minnesota had a total of 39 total (a new state record) confirmed touchdowns statewide and the three victims were each in very different locations throughout the state, not all in Albert Lea (one 250 miles to the north and the other 375 miles). Albert Lea itself is fine -- the tornados down there were way out in rural areas near there. The most extensive damage was done by the tornadoes up north, specifically the tornado in Wadena (the "middle" victim). Jinx |

Hi all! I received your note, O. Reporting our status, as ordered, ma'am! ![]() outside of the city of Albert Lea. Tornadoes seem to hate farms and mobile homes, for some reason. Spoke with a man at a photo studio yesterday who saw a brief touchdown about a block from his home in Albert Lea, a little northeast of downtown. We were watching the weather, which aired non-stop for around three hours, and could not see anything dark in the sky, although the location of the system was described as being approximately where we live, in relation to a major landmark. Except straight up. Crash waited until yesterday to tell me that the thing was stalled overhead. It was a wedge tornado (whatever that is), and varied, during its life, from 1/4 to 3/4 mile wide. Our basement has huge windows, so I wasn't completely sure that it was any safer down there than upstairs. In retrospect, we should have been down there with the spiders. Shoot! I could have gotten some laundry done! Seriously, though, I was very frightened. I'm glad Crash withheld that info from me. Here's a report from the local paper regarding touchdowns, the relatively local fatality, and damage. They mention Freeborn County a couple times. That's us. http://albertleatribune.com/news/201...freeborn-coun/ From what I understand, the other two lost Minnesota lives were a married couple in Grand Rapids, from the cell that came in from North Dakota. Albert Lea is about an hour and a half or so south of the Twin Cities, just a few miles north of the Iowa border. In other news, I've been learning about our food supply since getting on Facebook, with all of its amazing sources of information. In February, I became afraid to eat meat. Antibiotics, growth hormones, and the stuff they feed those factory-farmed animals! I've gotten free-range, organic chickens at the farmers market. It doesn't agree with my system anymore at all (like, we really should have two bathrooms). The grass-fed pork was even worse, although it tasted great. People like me are classified as Flexitarians, because we're primarily vegetarian, but willing to eat certain meats that aren't dreadful for you. I'm planning on eating lots of veggies today and tomorrow, when we're celebrating Father's Day with friends. AH! Deviled eggs! See? It's good to write things down. Activates your brain cells. ObFood: Today - grilled pork steaks, baked potatoes, and pencil-thin asparagus Tomorrow - boneless, skinless chicken breasts, and asparagus We have baby spinach for salads both days. I'm making Delia Smith's "foolproof" Foaming Hollandaise sauce for one of the batches of asparagus. Let's see if it's still considered foolproof after I try it. The other batch will be drizzled with butter, garlic, and lemon juice. Not sure yet how we're going to prepare the chicken. I think we'll have lemon cake with dinner tomorrow. Carol |
