I never forget.....it was my birthday. My dad was in the Navy in San
Diego, billeted at the Hotel Del Coronado, and got word that he had a
son. I still have the congratulatory telegram Mom got from him, and it
got into the papers that they had a son. When Mom mentioned it to the
nurses, they brought me in and undressed me so she could see for sure
that they had a daughter!!!

When my Mom passed away in 1994 I found an undeveloped roll of 35 mm
film, still in the aluminum canister. Took it to a local photo studio
(not one of those one hour jobs but a real photo studio) and they
developed the film. Turned out to be pictures made the day I was born,
September 23, 1939. Pictures of Mom and then Dad holding me as a
newborn, really caused a Wow! at our house. Value your Mom as long as
you can, my MIL lived to be 100 years old and we miss her now.

(I think it's properly, "Lest we forget," meaning, "let's not forget,"
or "in case we might forget," but I could be wrong about that.)

I wasn't old enough to know what was going on.....

No, you're right about that. The OP fell prey to a common
grammatical error. (Two of them, actually.)

The dictionary definition of "lest" is "for fear that". So
"lest we forget" means "for fear that we should forget", or
as it is used here, "so that we do not forget".
