Everyone should watch this:

No, it's not OT. If you're dead you can't cook.

I'm still going to do the 2 quick breaths first whether the Mayo
clinic or Red Cross likes it or not. *Then* start continuous chest
compressions. The quick breaths tell you that the airway is open.

Bob <-- hasn't taken a CPR class in about 30 years

I've had some meals where I wished the cook dead!

The Red Cross recommendation is to use "continuous chest compressions"
if on an adult with no signs of respiratory distress and you are not
comfortable giving full cpr.

So you are right on the money, according to Red Cross (although their
info is inconsistent as to whether you should start with 2 rescue
breaths or not).

I am a Red Cross Instructor and we still teach our students to do 2
rescue breaths and 30 chest compressions. However if you are squeamish
about giving rescue breaths (used to be called mouth to mouth
resuscitation) then it is critical that you at least do the chest
compressions to keep the circulation moving as there will be at least
some residual oxygen in the blood.

Good on ya Mrs GP for putting that up :-)

I re-certify every year for CPR, and every 2 years for Senior First Aid,
and because I am an Advanced Resus Technician, I have to re-qual every
12months for that as well.

It wasn't till my last re-qual (June last year) that we were told things
had changed. Now, it's straight into chest compressions, and bugger the
rescue breaths. A heart attack victim has at least 10mins of O2 in their
body/blood....... no need to swap spit with them.

I carry several disposable (one way valve) masks with me at all times, one
always on the outer of my backpack, and to this day have never used one
(in the 5 resus circumstances I've been in). And I've always worried
afterwards about diseases. At the time, it was get in, get the rescue
breaths in and start chest compressions. No time to frig around with a
small packet trying to get a plastic mask out.

But since last year........ I don't have to worry, and now I keep the
masks handy for that time when the ambulance with O2 on board is going to
take longer than 10 mins to get there. Then I can get a bystander (and you
*always* have plenty of them around!!) to get the mask out for me and
place it on while I keep up CC's.

Once again, well done ma'am, hopefully it will stick in someones brain and
next time they are near anyone who has a heart attack, they won't be so
reluctant to assist because they don't want to swap spit with the victim.
