Default Tefla, a Goan spice

A Goan fish curry recipe in a book that I have calls for a spice
called Tefla. What is Tefla? What are other names for it in English,
Hindi, Tamil or other Indian languages? I was unable to explain to a
shop in Bangalore what I wanted. Help would be appreciated. Of course,
other recipes using this spice would also be welcome.
