Default Maker of Twinkies Files for Bankruptcy

Interstate Bakeries Corp., the largest wholesale bakery in the U.S.,
filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Wednesday, listing more than $1.3
billion in debts. The company, which produces Wonder bread and Hostess
Twinkies, cited the falling demand for its bread and bakery products
amid the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets as a reason for its
financial woes.

What can you say about a company that
hawks styrofoam bread in an "artisan"
bread bag?

I'll miss the cheap sandwich breads
from their outlet stores.

They haven't gone anywhere, and aren't likely to anytime soon. Remember
Kmart?

Take that Dan White. So much for the Twinkie defense.

Try donating thousands of dollars to terrorists and see if you aren't
on the list, too.

That's what he gets for giving up a perfectly good career as a rock star to

Yup. NPR did a nice interview with a woman who wrote a social history
of Wonder Bread this afternoon. Interesting stuff.

Do we need another round of haiku in honor of all that debt?

Hey, I did my part with a box of Ho-Hos last weekend. And a smaller
package of the Caramel Ho-Hos -- pretty good they were. And Chapter 11
just means they get to catch their breath and figure out a better plan.
The Gedney folks were in Chapter 11 for about 16 months or so and things
are looking up for them. Chapter 11 is not a death sentence.

Or Donald Trump?

OTOH, there are some businesses that don't survive a Chapter 11. Pan
Am and TWA, for example.
