Default Ping: Nancy Young re missing posts

Nancy, you may remember that you and I were having the same problems some
time back; i.e., your posts didn't appear and other messages were missing.

The Ranger suggested I switch to http://www.news.individual.net and I did.
I'm very happy with it to date - it even filters out all the sleazy posts
being put on all newsgroups. My ISP news server doesn't bother to do that.

Dora, back at the time when you switched to news.individual.net, I
thought I'd give it a try as an alternative to my provider. I sent in
the information for registration and got their standard auto-responder
reply, but never heard from them again.

Then I'd try again. It took them a few days for a "real person" to reply,
but reply they did. I think they must establish that you're not a spammer,
or something, before giving you access to the news server. After that, you
set it up just like any other news server.

Strange. Maybe a network glitch or something. I've been using them for
years and they're pretty good. I'd try again.

I checked their site and I have 2 problems with them:
1) You are not allowed to 'spam-proof' your return address
2) You can't post binaries

Item 2 impacts posts to alt.food.binaries as well as other 'legitimate'
(non-porn) groups. I understand what they want to stop, but they cast too
wide of a net.

Re Item 1, I set up a Yahoo e-mail address for newsgroup purposes.

Re Item 2, I can appreciate this would cause a problem for those wishing to
post binaries. This news server works for me, but I can appreciate that it
may not work for everyone.

The reason for no binaries is to reduce the need for storage space.

They just want your regular address for their records...They could care
less what name/address you use posting. (not using them this time.) I use
them as my backup...incase I oops and blow away something I wanted to read.

(Using them) At Present I can see postings going back to July 1/04 on the
german free newsserver. On my regular newsserver I can at most see 1 month
maybe.

I know - it was Scuba who was objecting to giving his real e-mail address.
I used to use a spamproof phony address, but now use the Yahoo one for
newsgroups so people can e-mail me if they want to, without my broadcasting
my personal e-mail address. Yahoo filters the spam, too.

No, you are not 'spam proofing' your adress, you are giving an invalid
address. A 'spam proof' address is what I have. A person can determine the
correct e-mail address but an automated 'collector' would get an invalid
address. Semantics aside, both are against their rules.

My comment is, if I complain (and no I won't, I'm just trying to make a
point), you ARE breaking their rules and they CAN cut you off. Whether they
will or not, I have no idea. I base this on their policy statement:

Sender Address
The e-mail addresses given in "From:", "Reply-To:", and "Sender:" should be
your own and should be valid (= should not bounce because of invalidity).
