Default OT (sorta):To all going to Margaret's brunch

Heya all who are going to Margaret's brunch, and especially those that
are familiar with the NYC area and envirions.

I will be driving up on Friday afternoon, and I want to stay somewhere
in the region. I have no idea of where to stay so that I can be close
to Margarets. I don't know if I should stay somewhere close to a
train, or whatever public transportation there is.

However, there is a dilemma: I cannot walk long distances as I have
had a hip replacement. So if I do take public transportation to
Margarets, it has to be a short walking distance.

I want to make reservations really soon for a hotel nearby. So if
any of you could write to me privately and advise me, I would
appreciate it.

Thanks.

No, I am not on a budget.

That isn't the problem. It is finding out the best way to get into the
city. I have heard it is not the best city to drive in, and I don't
know my way around.

I was hoping someone would have some suggestions, especially for a
person that can't walk all that far.

I am amending my own post. I want to know if there is public
transportation that comes from outside the city to very close where
Margaret is. If so, I need to figure out where I can stay that I can
catch said public transportation, such as a subway, etc. I had been
thinking of staying outside the city, but closeby.

If this isn't feasible, I need to figure out another solution. This
is what i wanted advice on, from people in the area.

I don't know where in Manhattan you want to go, but there are three
crossings from NJ by car. All have marked exits from the NJ Turnpike.

The Holland Tunnel exits near Canal Street, and would be good if your
destination is south of 23d Street.

The Lincoln Tunnel is a few miles north and exits near midtown, around
40th St.

The George Washington Bridge exits in Northern Manhattan, aroud 160
St. IIRC.

Depending on your walking difficulty, you can put your car in a garage
on the NJ side, and take a PATH train from Hoboken or Jersey City.

There are parking garages very close to the Newport Pavonia PATH
station, and trains from there go to 33d St at 6th Ave and Broadway,
with stops at 23d, 14th, and ninth streets on 6th Ave, as well as one
at Christopher St near Hudson in Greenwich Village.

Therre are also ferries from many places along the NJ shor of the
lower Hudson River.

Garages are expensive in Manhattan, less so in NJ.

The PATH station at Newport Pavonia has two new hotels near it. A
'Courtyard by Marriott' and 'something or other Suites' I think.

We keep our sailboat at Newport Pavonia during the season because it
is convenient to get to. We walk from 5th Ave to 6th Ave on 14th st,
and take the PATH.

When you say "staying outside the city" I will assume you mean outside
Manhattan, but perhaps still in NYC, one of the other four boroughs. You can
take public transportation into Manhattan from any of the other four boroughs.
If you are arriving by plane then you can easily find accomodations near the
major airports and then travel into Manhatten by subway/bus... or you may opt
for a taxi... you haven't experienced NYC until you've experienced a NYC
cabbie. And if you have a travel partner to share with the NYC taxi fares are
not all that. For the uninitiated I strongly suggest a cab.

My hip replacement wasn't that recent, about 3 years ago. I still
can't walk incredibly long distances though. That might be feasible
though. How long are the long blocks?

Okay, things are looking up. Now I have to figure out where to stay
so I can access a subway, even if I have to take a train to get to the
subway.

No Noo Yawker combines public transportation with cab rides... there's a
minimum on the cab fare so might as well go all the way... and public
transportaion ain't all that inexpensive... plus for a newbie a cab ride offers
far less opportunity to lose ones way, is infinitely safer, and a cab ride can
be considered the scenic tour. Do your entire trek by taxi.

The latest fee is $27.00, plus bridges and tip. There is a $5.00
coupon, which you have to mention when you order the car. I just looked
it up, because I wanted to tell Christine. I hope she sees this.

The telephone number for the car service is 1-212-666-6666 and you have
to mention the coupon, with an expiration date of 6/30/2004. You would
have to call from the airport, because if I make the arrangements, you
will never find each other. You have a cell 'phone, if I remember
right.

I saw it. Just replied to your email too, along with a copy to Barb.

Anyone wanna do dinner on Friday evening, or on Saturday evening?

Margaret,

If I am invited to your brunch, as somebody said, could you repost
when and where? Or email me. I don't know if I am free, but it would
be nice to meet some of the regular posters to the newsgroup.

I take it the brunch is on a Saturday. If you get up early, I think
you would enjoy walking through the Union Square greenmarket. It is an
express subway stop on the Broadway BMT line (N,R,Q,W trains), the
Lexington Ave IRT (4,5,6 trains), and the crosstown L train.

You would understand why, although surrounded by splendid restaurants,
we rarely dine out.

Last August, we flew into JFK and took a "luxury cab" (I
don't remember the NYC term)... I think it was a Lincoln
Town Car. It cost around $45, plus the Tunnel Fee. The
trip had no surprises or wrong turns even though the address
we went to was not easy to find from that direction.

Mariott Courtyard Jersey City is right next to [100 ?? feet away]
from the entrance to the Pavonia Tube station which has elevator
access to the platforms. It's 10 minutes to mid town 33rd Street where
there are connections to several IND and BMT lines. I don't know if
they have elevator access to the platfoems.
