OT (sorta):To all going to Margaret's brunch
Heya all who are going to Margaret's brunch, and especially those that
are familiar with the NYC area and envirions. I will be driving up on Friday afternoon, and I want to stay somewhere in the region. I have no idea of where to stay so that I can be close to Margarets. I don't know if I should stay somewhere close to a train, or whatever public transportation there is. However, there is a dilemma: I cannot walk long distances as I have had a hip replacement. So if I do take public transportation to Margarets, it has to be a short walking distance. I want to make reservations really soon for a hotel nearby. So if any of you could write to me privately and advise me, I would appreciate it. Thanks. Christine |

All have marked exits from the NJ Turnpike. The Holland Tunnel exits near Canal Street, and would be good if your destination is south of 23d Street. The Lincoln Tunnel is a few miles north and exits near midtown, around 40th St. The George Washington Bridge exits in Northern Manhattan, aroud 160 St. IIRC. Depending on your walking difficulty, you can put your car in a garage on the NJ side, and take a PATH train from Hoboken or Jersey City. There are parking garages very close to the Newport Pavonia PATH station, and trains from there go to 33d St at 6th Ave and Broadway, with stops at 23d, 14th, and ninth streets on 6th Ave, as well as one at Christopher St near Hudson in Greenwich Village. Therre are also ferries from many places along the NJ shor of the lower Hudson River. Garages are expensive in Manhattan, less so in NJ. We keep our sailboat at Newport Pavonia during the season because it is convenient to get to. We walk from 5th Ave to 6th Ave on 14th st, and take the PATH. You can take public transportation into Manhattan from any of the other four boroughs. If you are arriving by plane then you can easily find accomodations near the major airports and then travel into Manhatten by subway/bus... or you may opt for a taxi... you haven't experienced NYC until you've experienced a NYC cabbie. And if you have a travel partner to share with the NYC taxi fares are not all that. Last August, we flew into JFK and took a "luxury cab" (I don't remember the NYC term)... I think it was a Lincoln Town Car. It cost around $45, plus the Tunnel Fee. Mariott Courtyard Jersey City is right next to [100 ?? feet away]
from the entrance to the Pavonia Tube station which has elevator access to the platforms. It's 10 minutes to mid town 33rd Street where there are connections to several IND and BMT lines.
