Default Cookalong Instructions

Heya folks,

This is mainly for those that haven't done a cookalong before.

It has evolved over the years since we first started doing them
sometime back in 2001-2002. Then, it was mainly amongst those that
particpated in chat, and chat is often a part of it. It would start
with those of us in chat picking a recipe and each of us cooking it at
our individual homes. We would chat some, go off to do some
chopping/mixing,etc, then come back to chat, go off to do more stuff
involved in the dish and so on through the completion and tasting of
the dish. We would critique how it turned out, what we varied and how
we liked our variations, and what we would do differently the next
time. The idea is to sort of emulate a real cook-in...so we often are
chatting, nibbling and imbibing our choice of beverage as we cook.

Due to the fact that a lot of people don't participate in chat, it has
evolved. Certainly, those that participate in chat can come do the
cookalong thing while chatting, but it isn't necessary.

So, the day of the cookalong, we will all cook our dish/dishes and
post about them. If you choose to take pictures and then post those,
they would be most welcome. Feel free to post during the cooking
process...to let us know how it is going.

Those of you that want to join in the chat and do the cookalong that
way are most welcome. We used to set a start time, but with people in
all parts of the globe, that doesn't always work so well now. Those
of us in the US that want to chat and cook at the same time, we can
sort of set a general time to start cooking and chatting. It is
usually sometime in the afternoon and usually finishing up in time for
a meal.

I think the last cookalong we did, a fair amount of people showed up
and came in and out of chat... Others just posted about what they
did...

As I said before, the general theme this time is RFC recipes. Either
from the RFC cookbook, or from any RFC recipes that you have saved. If
you haven't saved any and don't have the cookbook, I suppose you could
google for rfc recipes,if you want to participate. The catch in this,
as mentioned before..it should be a recipe you haven't done before.
For instance, if you have made brownies before, but haven't made
Barb's brownies that would the type of thing to do... The list could
be endless. The idea is to try something new to you.

Or you can just come and join us (in chat) for the company...

Shall we start sometime about 2pm or thereabouts for east coast time?
Or got a better suggestion??

Those of you not able to join in at that time...just cook that day
when it is convenient for you. Post when you can...take pictures...
Those of you that have done the cookalongs before, am I forgetting
anything?

Just went back and found the OP with the date.

I'm going to be of the people above.

We won't be back from the resort till the 2nd November.

Well..it will be November 2 your time, when we do the cookalong...it
will still be Nov 1 here. So, if you want to join in, feel free. Or
do it a day later. The main idea is to have fun...and do something
new.

There is always at least one person who couldn't do it on the
appointed day, but did it earlier or later and usually posted pictures
about what they made too. It all works out in the end. Participating
in chat while cooking makes it a real cook along and a lot of fun, but
for those who hate chat period or just can't do it that day - there
are other ways to participate. I'd love to see the chat room busy
around the clock on cook along day. I'd love to see Aussies in the
chat room cooking along in their time zones, Europe and Africa cooking
along in theirs and of course, USA/Canada cooking in their time zones.
Too bad we don't hear from Honduras (or was that Costa Rica) anymore
in chat.

I think you're right and there was a sad ending to the story.
However, I'm sorry she left us. She was a very nice person to chat
with!

Well, to have us Aussies in the chat room doing our cookalong, you'd have
to stay up all night to know about it.

Do you expect Americans to be in the chat room 24/7? My point is that
the rfc chat room should not depend on Americans to keep it lively.
We're doing our part, you do yours. There are several regular posters
in Aus/NZ. Get online at your time and cook along with each other!
It's not a difficult concept.

Aren't there White Russians involved or something? ;-)

I kind of want to choose my dishes from the Signature page. May ask my
blog readers to help me pick, and I've written to Charlotte to see if
she wants to hang out together that day.

And heck, I may even hang out in chat that day. ;-)

That's Boli...LOL. But he swears he doesn't cook. He tries to
convince us of that..but we aren't fooled....

I have been looking through the RFC cookbook...trying to figure out if
there is something there that I want to fix. I can't decide. I might
have to look at the signature dishes page. I am trying to keep it on
the healthier side these days though...Some of the desserts are
tempting me....

Keep your fingers crossed: I am being submitted for an
assignment/contract at Kaiser Oakland, to start mid December. No idea
if it will go through, but this may be one of my better chances of
getting my foot in the door to being hired permanently. Still waiting
on Alta Bates.

Might be time for another cookalong then and we could all hang
together for the day...

That would be wonderful, and if you end up at Kaiser Oakland, you'll get
to know my family too well (I know, you work with neonates, but
sometimes I feel like that place is a home away from home. Way too many
surgeries and hospital stays in my family this past couple of years.)

I totally understand. I actually hope to meet all the people you have
written about over the years. I love to meet families.

And hopefully there will be lots of opportunities to all gather around
a table...and plenty of cooking too. Maybe more cookalongs, and even
mini cook-ins.

I am almost afraid to even talk about this possibility right now, of
getting up the I feel like I don't want to jinx it. BUT, if it
happens, I am thinking that I will try to get there a few days early,
so I can go marketing, etc. If so, I will be in touch with you and we
can jaunt around to my favorite haunts, if you are available.

In the meantime, I am eating up all the stuff in my house. The
recipes that I am considering right now will include those
ingredients. I am thinking of making the Hungarian short ribs that
several folks on RFC have made, since I have some in the freezer that
really need to be used. Depends on the weather here though..we have
been rather summer like here still. If it stays this mild, I might
even be able to grill... I think there are a fair amount of grilled
foods in the RFC archives....

We aren't there all the time..so keep on checking. The cookalong
days, we often stay in the chat for hours and hours... Other days, it
is often in the evening (US time).
