I hate it. I'd almost hang up on some chompin' fool, unless it's a
dear friend who hasn't eaten all day. Providing he or she apologizes
too.

I answered from a work perspective. I support world wide on a technical
program and with posted hours (plus adjustments periodically for
Japan/Korea/Singapore or other direction, Rota/Bahrain).

I certainly do leave to grab a cuppa coffee or take a short break but those
are 10 mins. I do not take a lunch break other than to run down to the
building place and eat at my desk. Yes, your support call will be answered.
I might be chewing and swallowing fast for a moment when I answer, but I'll
wait to eat the rest of the lunch until 'your' needs are resolved. There's
only one of me, not a group so I really need to answer the phone. The
majority of my voice mail drop offs are from when I was on the phone with
another (I do not ask a caller to wait while i see who the other one is).

I also have support calls at times at night at home by special arrangement.
Eastern Asia needs that occasionally. If they also catch me munching
dinner, they don't mind. They are just happy they didnt have to get up at
2am their time to solve a problem.

They can chew on their cud after getting off the phone with me. Smacking gum
like a 2-bit whore isn't an endearing noise either.

telephone solicitor? It seems only fair that they should be
allowed/expected to eat on the job, since they are calling people who
are likely to be in the middle of dinner anyway.

I don't answer the phone when I'm eating, so MCINL for that one. My
wife is fanatical about answering the phone. She can't stand to miss a
call. Of course, then she gets upset when her meal is disturbed for a
junk call. When the phone rings and we are eating, she jumps up and
trips and falls all over trying to get to the phone in time. I got
tired of this, especially since I was often the one she banged into, so
I tried putting a phone on the table right in front of her. She just
ignored it, and still got up and struggled to another phone, so I gave
up. Plus, all of our phones are cordless, and she almost never hangs
them up after she is done talking, which adds to the confusion when the
phone rings. "Where's the phone? Where's the phone? I can't find it!".

I see that "finish chewing" before answering has a lot of support. I'd
agree with that since, if I take longer than 4 rings, the answering
service will kick in. Anyone who can't leave a message doesn't deserve
an answer any way. The same applies to people who have disabled caller
ID but I will ordinarily see if there is anyone on the "missed call"
list that I consider worth calling.

Fun survey! :-)

I hang up on so many telemarketers, and collection people since those
calls have never been for me personally, just relatives.

I've never yet had someone call me that was eating over the phone and if
I am in the middle of a mouthful when the phone rings, I'll either try
to finish that bite, or cheek it and try to discreetly finish it after
answering.
