Default OT!!! Need a quick poll on cats please

Just curious about the percentage of folks that would love or hate cats
at the Doctors or therapists offices...

Me? I'd love it.

Not sure I understand the question...

I currently have two cats at home (including one thats 15 yrs old and
has Asthma).

Do I want another one at the doctors office when getting a physical? Not
needed if that was where you were headed.

I'd just find a sweet one to be peaceful in the waiting area.

All the vets' offices seem to have cats - mostly for blood donor
purposes, but still ....

They're hardly sterile - many docs' waiting rooms have carpet - I
wouldn't want cat hair with my appointment, thanks.

I've never been to a Vet that had cats or any other critters running
loose and I've been to many Vet's offices, all are in back properly
secured in the kennel area.... a few have had aquariums in their
waiting room, but so does my Primary care doctor.

I have seen some grundgy Vet's offices but I've seen just as grundgy
people doctor offices.... but that's why we have feet. My current
Vet's office is scrupulously clean, and no animal smells at all... I
only wish people doctors kept such a tidy facility.

My current vet has an office cat that has run of the waiting room. She
prefers to stay on the counter and snooze unless she sees someone pick up a
sample of the free food they always keep in a basket. She's hopeful that
someone will see just how starving she is and NEEDS that person to open the
free sample and feed it to her.

She has a birth defect. One of her front paws doesn't straighten out and is
kept curled under. She doesn't walk on it generally, but other than hopping
around on three legs, she sometimes leans on what would be to us the top
part of her "wrist" and walks a little that way. She's very cute, and
friendly, and a purrfect office cat. She's a blood donor, too.

I've seen "office" pets at a veterinary office. I have not, and would
not expect to see one in any other professional office. In the vet's
place? no problem. You'd have to share the waiting room with other
critters anyway wouldn't you?

Our vet has a lab cat and two lab dogs that have free run of the place.
Our rat terrier is the only other dog that's allowed in the office
without a leash. They've taken care of her since she was born a little
over two years ago.

Many vets offices have a resident cat. :-)
Fish tanks seem to be popular for people doctors. My last dentists
office had a seawater tank.

How did we make the jump from a people doctor's office to the
veterinarian?

With the cost of healthcare in American, perhaps some people find it cheaper
to go to the veterinarian.
The only difference is that they would have to get down on all fours before
being examined!

I think many feel the vets office is a more appropriate setting for such
an idea.

There's no jump... no one specified what kind of doctor... a
Veterinarian is indeed a medical doctor.

....because Omelet wanted to know if anyone thought having a cat in a
doctor's office or therapist's office was a good idea - and I said no
thanks to the cat hair, and it degenerated (or migrated, depending on
your view) from around there somewhere. LOL.

Well, Shel, we're different out here in flyover country. I've used
three different vets for pets over the years, and all of them had
"counter cats" -office pets that roamed free around the offices.

And just because someone has not experienced it, does not make them
right. Grungy is only a state of mind for the perceiver. I also know
people that say they can't stand cats in their house or others as they
can't stand the smell. That is the perspective of a small mind, or a
small circle of acquaintances. I have two cat's (used to be three until
recently), and I have one dog (use to be two until recently). If there
are any smells in my house pet related, it was near the dog beds (he has
two, one upstairs, and one down), and that was only because I hadn't
gotten around to washing them recently. You would not know I have cats
unless you saw them. I have two litter boxes I clean daily, and pretty
much dump for new litter at least weekly.

I find that having a few pets around a good thing. They can be
aggravating, but usually they are less aggravating than a spouse would be.

And yes, I actually have a spouse also.

Nonsense. It's the perspective of someone who doesn't want cats.

I had cats every day of my life for 40 yrs. Now I have none. I don't
want cats, I don't want the hassle of cats, I don't want the smell of
cats, and I don't want the shedded hair of cats. It's not that I hate
cats or have somehow learned to dislike cats, its just I don't want
one and I'm not wild about ppl with a house full of 'em.

I do dislike feral cats and would shoot 'em in a heartbeat if there
were any around. Fortunately, there is not. Not because I dislike
them, but I consider feral cats vermin which spread disease and eat
birds. I also don't like cockroaches for much the same reason.

Over the years I have taken my dogs to at least 6 different vets in the
area. Not one "counter cat".

And two of the four vets I've used in the last twenty years had them.

Your point was, other than pointing out your vets did not have office pets?

That only says your experience did not include the office pets. Some of
us had/have experience that some do.

I think many of us do not have issue with having office pets in a vet's
office. We do if it's a regular human doctor's office.

you gotta ask the man. they're 'under-the-counter' cats.

Why not? So ppl who's getting bored there could start harassing the cata,
instead of harassing the other patients awaiting therein with theyr personal
bad day.

Don't know about cats but dogs work. I am very familiar (not as a
patient) with a local pain management practice. The main docs daughter
brings in her two dogs each day and some patients who need to be wheeled
in seem to really enjoy and benefit from engaging the dogs.

Considering the pain issues I've had lately, that would not be a bad
thing... :-) I'm checking out a new therapist tomorrow morning.

1. I did not understand your question initially.
2. I do not believe cats belong in an area of a business that deals with
the public or at the very least not in the public area.
3. Thanks with your comments about X but we actually found a vet who came
to the house when it was time and we were able to hold & comfort X at her
moment or passing.

Lots of kitties need homes ... maybe after a while you'll want to help
another one. I lost a cat at age 18-20--two months later I adopted another
stray and she is the sweetest cat ever. (I did love my other cat very much,
but she was kind of mean and pretty dumb for a cat. Beautiful, though.)

Big problem around here - cars get out and are only seen again on a
telephone pole announcing LOST CAT.

Personally I suspect one of the following seen in the area:
Cougars ( 3 as far as we know)
Coyotes
Foxes.

Don't know about the possums, skunk, or the raccoons.

Bah! Humbug! It's bad enough they bring critters into the library
occasionally for show and tell. No critters in the doctor offices. Never
been to a therapist except physical so can't speak for the head doctors
offices.

Well, my kids' orthodontist had a pair of chocolate labs wandering
around the clinic.

The vet has a handful of cats and a tank full of fish. Scully finds the
fish soothing, although she is somewhat unnerved by the grey cat who
peers at her from over the counter. Zane is mesmerized by the cats.
And it is amusing to see Cooper (Mr. Tough Guy) pretending he doesn't
see them.

Aside from, perhaps, the allergist's office, I am all in favor of
animals in healthcare settings.
