Default Grrrrrr! Need Free News Server

I'm suddenly having problems posting with Agent. I can download
headers and bodies, courtesy of charter.net, but my posts aren't going
out. One managed to escape this morning, but the rest are sitting in
the Outbox, getting cold and lonely. Charter is blaming my
newsreader. I don't think the problem lies with Agent, myself.

Does anyone know of a free news service (we're flat broke) that I can
use with Agent?

Also, would someone be willing to repost this so the google-blockers
will see my request for help?

Thanks so much!

news.motzarella.org is free with registration and usually quite
responsive. Note the spelling; it's *not* a cheese :-)

Consider it done Carol,

When Comcast made the decision to dump Usenet I switched to
usenetmonster.com. It does cost $2.95 month. However, I can read and post
to the binary groups.

Blonde moment here. It never occured to me to ask Crash if his
Ultrafeed account could be used on my computer. So now I'm
downloading through Ultrafeed, but still can't post. I'm wondering if
this is a sign from God.

Still no joy. Agent users: is it possible for Agent to just suddenly
decide not to send messages?

I recall back when I used Agent having difficulty sending messages at
first. I think it was an outgoing server issue but I don't really
recall. Having a blonde moment of my own!

Bummer!

I had a similar problem, but it was because I had not properly
tweaked Agent 5.0/1170 and my messages were not showing
up in the Sent folder. Seems to be working now. (XX)

NEWS: I subscribe both to Verizon and Earthlink(Giganews).
Verizon no longer has *any* alt.* newsgroups. Zip. Zero!
Nada. Nyetski! Nichts! They are gone! Weg!

Seems NY AG was interested in blocking some 88 alt.*
groups which were (at least potentially) subject to
posting and downloading of questionable binaries. Verizon
untied the Gordian know as Alexander did.... He destroyed
it. The have now dropped all alt.* groups regardless of
content. Sorry, you guys,

alt.food.recipes
alt.food.cajun
alt.food.mexican cooking
alt.food.*
alt.binaries.food.*

are all listed in my newsclient. Lucky for me, all are
still on Giganews.

Well, no they don't - not really. They do allow you to subscribe to the
group, but they don't carry any posts with the attachments (i.e. the
pictures). Which defeats the whole object. We've been through this one
before, BTW.

I just added it 2 days ago. I haven't had many pics today or yesterday, but
the first day I subscribed to it I got a bunch.

I use usenetmonster.com as well and it does well for the $2.95/mo with
no group limitations and even response from support when I had an issue.
The rollover of unused GB each month ensures I'll never go over quota.

$2.95/mo isn't free, but it's pretty close and I don't believe there are
any free options if you want binary groups as well i.e.
alt.binaries.food. I think there are other servers where you can buy a
block of GB up front.

Someone else noted that it isn't the real binary group you get, but on
the amount of GB binary groups eat up, the answer is "very little".
Unless you're into downloading pirated HD movies and such it's not an
issue, a binary group like A.B.F. uses very little of your quota.

There are like 8 or so posts in a.b.f. from Sun and Mon so far (not

<g> I saw a few more than that (with attachments). But then I pay for my
Usenet access for binaries. Costs me US$5.00 every coupla years... Not

Forte has just opened their APN new service, but I don't know where
their feeds come from. The minimum cost is under $3.00/month. You
can get a free 3 month trial, if you upgrade Agent to 5.0/1170.

Don't work that way, CC. Free Agent is just that, free. It lacks some
features that the full-bore version has, but features don't fade out
like some other app trial versions do. Forte's been really good about
that.

That being said, I botched the setup on my trial APN and they
haven't responded to my enquiries. So far, I'm chalking it up
to the holiday season. So far....

FWIW: Version 5.0 hadn't been released 6 weeks before
a fixit patch was released for problems that everybody
missed in beta testing. The most current V. is build
1170. AGent users, go to help/about Agent/ to where your
serial number shows up. It should read Version 5.0/32.1700.

But you already knew that....

That would be the one. I went back and counted. I only downloaded the
first few and then hit catch up. Of the ones I downloaded I got 10 pics. I
haven't had any since so as it has been posted that there have been some, I
guess it was just a blip that I got those 10.

Eh?
They opened their service many, many years ago.

They run their own servers.

Yep. Must have been a blip.

If you want moderate amounts of binary access, I recommend a block
account. You pay by the gigabyte of bandwidth, and use a block until
it's gone. For instance, usenet-news.net charges $3 for five gigs.

A few gig will last a long time unless you're downloading TV shows from
multimedia groups or something. If all you're doing is getting images
from alt.food.binary or the like, a five-gig block would last all year
and then some.

I use Thunderbird for e-mail, and have tried it for newsgroups, but it
was a painful experience. I've been using Agent for over ten years
now. All I want is for it to WORK!

Thank you to the person who gave me a year of individual.net.

I did the TBird thing for a while, but my system kept hanging. (Sort
messages, still running after 4 hours?) Finally abandoned it and went
back to Agent. System cleared up wonderfully. Using XP. Wife has
Vista, can't use TBird at all for some reason. Uses earthlink webmail.

Alex, who started with Mosaic. And then fell for Eudora.
