December 8, 1980.........Mark David Chapman shot and killed John Lennon in
front of his home in the Dakota building in NYC. Da-yam I feel old, I was
in college and my roommate and I went into mourning for a week. Who's up
for a 'dead spread' in honor of John Lennon. If you were going to one, what
would you bring......think not only 'dead spread' but 'beetles' as well.

Well, a Savoy Truffle, of course!

Creme tangerine and montelimat
A ginger sling with a pineapple heart
A coffee dessert, yes, you know it's good news
But you'll have to have them all pulled out
After the Savoy truffle

I can still hear that song ... I think I went through to sets of the
White Album.

I lived alone at the time in a condo. I was in the kitchen cooking dinner
for myself and watching a small TV when a newsflash broke in to announce
the tragedy. I'll never forget that.

Perhaps I'm slightly too young, being just shy of 11 at the time, but I
was never much of a beetles fan and gave it little note.

I was going through a separation with my ex & had just moved back in

Been wondering if Chapman is still in prison or walking the streets.

chocolate dipped prior to putting them on the 'spread'.........

RIP Mr Lennon.

I'd start with some Savoy Truffle. Then I'd forage the Octopus's Garden for
some Glass Onion with a hint of Mean Mr Mustard. For dessert, some Wild
Honey Pie.

He just recently became eligible for parole. Yoko sent a letter requesting
it be denied, it was too emotional for her to attend in person. Parole was
denied.

On the other end of the spectrum, I was a freshman in college when the
Beatles first hit the American music scene in February, 1964. The father
of a highschool friend was a music promoter and got the two of us front row
seats for their Feburary, 1966 concert in Cleveland's Public Hall.

You are my vintage. I went to see their concert in Toronto. All the
girls were screaming so loud that I never hear anything. One of the
opening acts was King Curtis, and what I didn't know until a few years
ago was that Jimi Hendrix was played guitar for King Curtis.

So I went to a Beatles convert and never heard a note, and I saw Jimi
Hendrix playing and didn't know it.

I was 23 years old that year. I hated the kitchen in that house. But it
was my house and that's what counted at the time.

In the 1980 range (10-11), omelets were one of my main specialties.

Eggs because "I am the egg man..."

Oysters because "I Am The Walrus" is supposed to be a reference to
Lewis Carroll's "The Walrus and the Carpenter," which involves eating
a boatload of bivalves.

Tangerines, marmelade, and marshmallow pies because...

Octopus because of the garden.

Stawberries because of the fields.

They were pretty well fed up with the scene, and with each other by that
point. They had always liked playing live but their shows were
screamfests and they couldn't even hear themselves play. They couldn't
go anywhere without people going nuts. George Harrison was getting
frustrated because McCartney and Lennon wouldn't do any of his songs.

That was a period when we were doing a lot of dinner parties. I made
curries, some Greek meals, racks of lamb, and lots of pies, pies, pies. I
also made a lot of sorbets during that period.

Sounds tasty. I wasn't quite that advanced culinarily at that point, but
I was watching Julia...

I was doing a LOT of dinner parties then as well. Lessee..what else
was I cooking?

I was getting, or had gotten most of The Good Cook series, by Richard
Olney. Hadn't discovered his other works yet, but damn, that series
taught me a lot. I think I was cooking osso buco from there, among
other things.

I hadn't discovered Indian food yet, nor many other cuisines, except
those I found through the series Foods of the World. No vegetarian
either, or not much. I think I had Anna Thomas' books, The Vegetarian
Epicure. But hadn't discovered Moosewood yet. Nor California
cuisine.... Nor Marcella Hazan, I don't think.

I was living in the Washington DC area...and one of my absolute
favorite cooking/kitchenware stores of all time was the Kitchen
Bazaar. I loved that place... I started feeding my cookbook addiction
there for real...and I started collecting so much good kitchenware
there. I still have great pieces from that time..and from that store.
One is a charlotte mold..in tin. I was so proud when I got that
piece.

Hmm...instead of doing foods to honor the Beatles/John Lennon, maybe I
could do foods I was cooking from that era.... I will have to go back
through all my cookbooks to see what I was using then.

I don't think I ever missed an episode of her original series, "The Frech
Chef", and missed very few of her later series'.

I have a fair assortment of her cookbooks, starting the Mastering the Art
of French Cooking. I have to admit, however, that true French cooking is
not among my favorites.

What I learned most from her was technique, shortcuts that really worked,
the true love of good food, and that it didn't always to be terribly
complicated.

I remember walking out of my cottage first thing in the morning and there was
Julie, a close friend, walking down the main street in Ocean Beach, San Diego
dressed in a black dress. I asked why the black and she told me John Lennon
was shot and killed. I was quite shocked, to the point of nervous.

I met him once. R.I.P.

Bridge Kitchenware in NYC was my passion prior to, during, and after that
period. I did much as you did, as far as collecting cookware, gadgets, and
cookbooks. For more than two decades we made quarterly trips into
Manhattan, and I never made a trip without a stop at Bridge. Alas, they
have now closed their Manhattan store, established in 1946, and have moved
to East Hanover, N.J. Those trips usually also included stops at Zabars
and Balducci's. I would board the plane with two huge shopping bags full
of goodies, other things being delivered by post. What a grand time that
was.

My friend was going to the music store one day. I gave him $20 and told him
to bring me back a copy of the White Album. He did, and said anyone who
would pay $8 for an album was a total idiot.

Hey, I resemble that remark.

Next to Sgt.. Pepper's, their best. Well, not discounting any of the
others, that is.

Still brings back memories today, LaSereD into my memory. Ah, the sixties.
I remember them well.

Some days better than others
