December 8, 1980.........Mark David Chapman shot and killed John Lennon in
front of his home in the Dakota building in NYC. Da-yam I feel old, I was
in college and my roommate and I went into mourning for a week. Who's up
for a 'dead spread' in honor of John Lennon. If you were going to one, what
would you bring......think not only 'dead spread' but 'beetles' as well.

Well, a Savoy Truffle, of course!

Creme tangerine and montelimat
A ginger sling with a pineapple heart
A coffee dessert, yes, you know it's good news
But you'll have to have them all pulled out
After the Savoy truffle

I can still hear that song ... I think I went through to sets of the
White Album.

I lived alone at the time in a condo. I was in the kitchen cooking dinner
for myself and watching a small TV when a newsflash broke in to announce
the tragedy. I'll never forget that.

My friend was going to the music store one day. I gave him $20 and told him
to bring me back a copy of the White Album. He did, and said anyone who
would pay $8 for an album was a total idiot.

Hey, I resemble that remark.

Next to Sgt.. Pepper's, their best. Well, not discounting any of the
others, that is.

Still brings back memories today, LaSereD into my memory. Ah, the sixties.
I remember them well.

Some days better than others

I'm having a cow. Just checked my son's grade in Earth Sciences and
he's missing ANOTHER assignment.

The cell phone is mine. He'll get it back when he gets his grade back up.

Perhaps I'm slightly too young, being just shy of 11 at the time, but I
was never much of a beetles fan and gave it little note.

I was living in NYC at the time. I remember hearing it on TV and saying

What?"

Just "Imagine" what he woulkd have done and created in these years since

On the other end of the spectrum, I was a freshman in college when the
Beatles first hit the American music scene in February, 1964. The father
of a highschool friend was a music promoter and got the two of us front row
seats for their Feburary, 1966 concert in Cleveland's Public Hall.

I was 23 years old that year. I hated the kitchen in that house. But it
was my house and that's what counted at the time.

I still love his music and listen to it regularly. The first album I ever
heard was "Cry of Love," which I think was a posthumous compilation. There
is something of the sound and motion of the sea in his guitar. I even like
his vocals.

Angel!

Considered by some his most commercial album.

I have a copy!

Out of print.

Maybe! It appealed to a twelve year old. I have heard all the others, and
love them too.

he also writes better lyrics than he's given credit for.

I remember where I was when JFK died. I was a baby... Well, a toddler,
really, and it happened I was at the little house on Thrush Ave. My
baby sister was crying and I couldn't find our mom (this was a 4 room
house), and I was making another pass when I heard her in the bathroom.
She was sitting on the edge of the bathtub, in the dark, with her face
in her hands, crying. She said that the president was dead. Of course
I had no idea what a president was, or what dead was, for that matter.
but I cried, too, because seeing a parent in distress feels like the end
of the world to a little kid. That is quite literally my first
conscious memory, burned into my brain by the sight of a woman I
regarded as a god reduced to tears.

I remember where I was when John Lennon died, but as with JFK, it was
the tears of others that made the impression. I was 18 and the
receptionist at the doctor's office where I was waiting to be seen hung
her head and wept.

I myself cried for the loss of the space shuttles Challenger and
Columbia and their crews. I cried again, years later, when I heard that
Challenger's pilot Mike Smith's last words were "Uh oh", and that the
crew were still breathing when they hit the water.

And I cried with the entire nation over 9/11.

Whoa, you're a very emotional person. Remind me not to say anything
remotely negative to you!

I remember where I was when Lennon died. I was just leaving "Monday
night at the ranch", our weekly guitar jam at a friend's place. I had
just started the car and was waiting for my friend Marty to leave
because he was parked behind me. He came over and told me that he had
just heard it on the radio.

Hendrix was a fvcked - up druggie loser, he should never have even been
*born*...

I abhor "rock" music in general, it takes no talent to write or perform, a
retarded toddler could do it, and that's about the highest level that
Hendrix, The Beatles, etc,. ever achieved. It's strictly kiddie krap, not
adult music...

I didn't really know who he was, except I did react when he died.
Why, you ask?

I know it didn't make any sense, but I'm oblivious to the creators of
music. I like what I like and I don't notice who makes it. After I
figured out who he was and what he *did* that I liked - I missed him.
Bob Marley was another great one, as was Cat Stevens (who is not dead,
just "gone" - but coming back, so I hear). Yay, Cat!

Isn't it "Beatles", with an "a", not "Beetles"?

Of course it is.

John Lennon was sitting chilling out one day when a beetle crawled over the
carpet. He leans forward and says, "hey you, I named my group after you".
The beetle says "What, you named your band 'Eric'?".

boom boom.
